Living so among his desires, a man in women's keeping, he came to see how his own self had been hidden from him; and, weary of it, he sang this song for his beloved. Hear this song, daughter of Bhrgu, which one of my sort has walked out on the earth. The steady, who live in the forest, grieve over the man who lives in the village. There was a he-goat alone in a forest, casting about for what he liked, and he saw a she-goat fallen into a well, brought there by her own doing. Full of desire for her, the he-goat thought how she might be got out, and with the point of his horn he broke the bank down and made a landing where she could climb.

She came up out of the well, a fine-hipped one, and she wanted him and no other. And many she-goats, seeing him chosen by her, wanted a mate too, and wanted him: the fat one, the bearded, the favourite, the generous, who knew the business. One buck among many, he raised their pleasure and took his own; and seized by the spirit of desire, he did not come to know himself.
