Then in Vraja great portents of the three kinds, very terrible, rose in the earth and in the sky and in the body, telling of a danger close at hand. Seeing them, the cowherds were shaken with fear, Nanda at the head of them, for they knew that Krsna had gone to pasture the cows without Rama. Not knowing what he was, they took it from those bad signs that his death had come. Their breath was in him and their minds were on him, and they were sick with pain and grief and fear. All of them, dear one, from children to old people and women, whose living was in the cattle, came out of Gokula, wretched, longing to see Krsna.

Seeing them in such distress, the Bhagavan Madhava Bala laughed and said nothing, for he knew his younger brother's power. Searching for their beloved Krsna, they went by the footprints, which were marked with the signs of the Bhagavan, along the track to the bank of the Yamuna. Here and there along the cattle road, in the spaces between the other prints, they saw the footprints of the lord of the people, marked with lotus and barley grain and hook and thunderbolt and banner; and looking at them, dear one, they went quickly on.
