Seeing the snake sunk under the great weight of Krsna, who holds the world in his womb, the umbrellas of its hoods broken by the striking of his heels, its wives came up to the first one in pain, their clothes and ornaments and hair-knots slipping loose. With their minds badly shaken, putting their children in front of them, they laid their bodies on the ground and bowed to the lord of beings. Those true women, palms joined, wanting release for their husband who had done wrong, came for shelter to the giver of shelter. The snake's wives said: The punishment is just, since he has done wrong, and your coming down is for the checking of the wicked. You look on an enemy's children as on your own, and you lay the correction on with only its fruit in view.

This is a kindness you have done us, for your punishment of the worthless takes away their stain. And since this creature has the nature of a biting snake, even your anger is counted a kindness. What austerity did he do well before this, with his pride cast off and honour given to others? Or what dharma, out of pity for all people, that you should be pleased, who are the life in everything? God, we do not know whose power this is, this right to touch the dust of your feet. Longing for it, Sri the lady did austerities, leaving desires behind and holding to her vow a long while. Those who have come to the dust of your feet do not want the height of heaven, nor rule over the whole earth, nor the highest station, nor lordship over the lower world, nor the powers of yoga, nor an end to being born.

So this one has come by what others find hard to come by, master, though he is the lord of snakes, born of darkness and in the grip of anger: that splendour which would stand before the eyes of any creature turning on the wheel of the round of birth, if he wanted it.
