Then all around them a forest fire came up of itself, the one whose banner is smoke, the end of the creatures that live in the woods, urged on by the wind, its driver, with fierce brands, huge, licking at everything standing and moving. Seeing that forest fire coming down on them from every side, the cowherds and the cows were afraid, and putting themselves in the hands of Krsna and Bala they spoke, as people wrung by the fear of death turn to Hari. Krsna, Krsna, great hero! Rama, whose valour has no measure! We are burning in this forest fire and we have come to you: save us. Surely your own people, Krsna, ought not to be left to sink. You know every dharma, and we have you for our lord and for our one resort.

Hearing the wretched words of his own people, Hari the Bhagavan said to them: Shut your eyes. Do not be afraid. So be it, they said, and when their eyes were closed the Bhagavan, the master of yoga, drank that fierce fire down with his mouth and brought them out of danger.
