Knowing that his parents had grasped who he was, the best of Persons spread out his own maya, which bewilders people, so that it should not be so. Then the bull of the Satvatas came with his elder brother to his mother and father, bowed low and modest, pleasing them, and said with respect: Mother. Father. Father, though the two of you longed for us without a break, you never had from us, from your two sons, our infancy, our boyhood, our first youth. Fate struck us, and we never had a home near you, nor that gladness children find when they are petted and live in their own father's house.

In plain words

39. The Schooling of the All-Knowing Lord of All "O great soul! However many of Kṛṣṇa's sweet childhood līlās I hear, my thirst for them is never quenched. How blessed were my grandfathers, who beheld Him with their own eyes! Moving about like an ordinary human being, yet holding everything contained within Himself — such was the divine form, Kṛṣṇa. Ah! Truly, what merit did I earn in which birth, that I should spend these remaining days hearing the līlās of the Lord who reclines on Śeṣa! Or rather, it is that great ṛṣi's curse that is washing away my sins. To that ṛṣi's son, who brought about such a blessed opportunity, I once more offer my thousandfold prostrations. As my time draws near, my whole feeling is becoming absorbed in drinking in Kṛṣṇa's sweet līlās; it intoxicates me and makes me as one maddened. So that Kṛṣṇa's form may cling fast within my citta, cool the burning of these remaining hours with the drink of my Gopāla's līlās" — so he prayed. The Sūtradhāra of the Līlā-Drama Śuka, the rasa of compassion welling up in him, said: "O King! What would you have me tell? Kṛṣṇa's līlās cannot be exhausted even if told for ages — to contain them within a few hours is possible for no one at all." Then Mahārāja Parīkṣit said: "Svāmī! I have heard that our Kṛṣṇa, together with Balarāma, learned His lessons at the feet of a fortunate man named Sāndīpa. Yet of all learning

the Lord of All has crossed to the far shore — would there be anyone, himself unlearned, to teach learning to Him? It is all līlā. Whom He must lift across, and in what way, only Gopāla, the Sūtradhāra of this Līlā-drama, knows. Wishing to lift Sāndīpani across, He must have played out this drama. If you let me hear some of the drama He played out beside Sāndīpani, I shall hear it and be carried across, Lord!" So he prayed. Śuka burst out laughing: "O King! What you have said is the supreme truth — it is all a drama. For Kṛṣṇa's drama, the whole world is the stage! Into it He fits many curtains, many layers, many compartments, and keeps laying His plans to carry beings across. Because Sāndīpa's good fortune had ripened, He granted him such an opportunity and placed it in his hands. I shall tell you of that līlā-drama; listen." So he began. Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa grew day by day, becoming radiant like the sun, and as they shone, Devakī and Vasudeva, considering the boys' future and themselves bound by Māyā, resolved that they must be given an education. They summoned Garga, their family guru, fixed auspicious times, and performed the upanayana saṃskāras with great splendour; they gave many gifts in charity, and held festivals with entertainments so that joy would spread not only among the people of Repalle but among everyone in that region. They called in scholars, consulted with Garga, and deliberated that for their children they needed the best of scholars, one who would teach the highest learning. The Wondrous Schooling of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma Garga, the family guru, reflected for a while and then stated firmly that a best-of-scholars named Sāndīpa, a native of Avantīpura dwelling on the bank of the Gaṅgā in the city of Kāśī, was pure of heart, and that it would be good to leave our Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa in his care. Because he said this so firmly, Devakī and Vasudeva — though they felt some pain at leaving the boys and sending them so far away — 'learning without a guru is blind learning'

— this being a truth they recognised, they agreed. Taking their sons Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa with them in person, they reached the city of Kāśī and entrusted them to Sāndīpa; and having made fitting arrangements for them, Vasudeva returned to Repalle with a heavy heart. From that day on, our Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa lived beside Sāndīpa in reverent fear and devotion, studying their lessons. In the world there are children by the thousand, by the lakh, by the crore — but children who satisfied their guru, learned properly everything the guru taught, and regarded themselves, recognised themselves and behaved as seekers of learning rather than seekers of sense-objects — such children were our Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa. Contradicting the guru, overstepping his command, disobedient conduct — they never knew any of these on any day. Though endowed with every power, they lived the condition that befitted their station. Seeing those boys, possessed of such śraddhā and Bhakti, conducting themselves with humility and obedience, admitting no other thought into their heads except reciting back the lessons taught to them, Sāndīpa used to swell with joy within himself. Seeing such children, Sāndīpa with boundless Prema went on to teach them all the further branches of learning — new logic, grammar, dharma-śāstra, artha-śāstra and the rest. Mahārāja! How shall I describe it? There may be people in the world who learn one subject a month, one a year, one in five years — but our Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, though they stayed in Sāndīpa's house only sixty-four days, learned the sixty-four branches of learning. What else is this but one of His līlās! Is it possible for everyone to learn like this? Yet as he watched these children's humility and obedience, accepted their service and conversed with them, every now and then Sāndīpa, unable to hold back a grief that came welling up, would stream with tears. Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa would hesitate, back and forth, to ask him the reason for it. At last one day, Gopāla humbly, to His revered guru,

with folded hands, said: "O best of gurus! Now and then, while you are talking with us, you recall something and your tears stream down. If it seems right to you that we may know the reason for this, please tell us." At that prayer, the pain deep within Sāndīpa was stirred up. With a grief he could not contain, he embraced Gopāla and began to weep aloud. Gopāla, though He knew everything, acted like one who knew nothing: "Guruji! Tell us the cause of your grief. We shall try to remove it, employing our utmost strength! For us there is no holier task than making our guru happy. Do not hesitate, and do not think of us as mere children — please tell us." In many such ways Gopāla entreated Sāndīpani. Sāndīpa was pleased, and drawing Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa close to him on either side, said: "My dear children! It is my good fortune to have come by such disciples. Your words alone have given me as much joy as if my task were already accomplished. My antarātma is telling me that you are no ordinary boys. That is exactly why — because the firm conviction that you can accomplish this task presses upon me — I am faltering, going forward and back. Who knows how my lot stands." And as he again began to shed tears, Balarāma once more took hold of the guru's feet: "Guru! Why such doubt toward us, who are as your own sons? To give you joy we would offer even our lives — please tell us." At this prayer, the children's truthful words made Sāndīpa feel ashamed, and he decided that it was right to tell them. Śrī Kṛṣṇa's Unprecedented Guru-Dakṣiṇā "My sons! After long, long waiting, a son was born to me. We were raising him, loving him as our very life. One day, going to bathe at the Prabhāsa tīrtha, where the waters meet the sea, he drowned in the sea. Whenever I see you and all the while I experience your humility and obedience,

that son rises vividly before my eyes. Looking at you, I have been experiencing such joy! You have learned everything you had to learn, and very quickly. Now there will be no reason for you, either, to remain with me. Whom shall I look at now and rejoice?" — and he wept aloud. Gopāla grew fierce: "O best of gurus! You have taught us so many unprecedented branches of learning — surely it is not that we have no duty to show fitting gratitude for it! So we shall set out this very moment, fight with the Ocean, bring back your jewel of a son, and offer him to you. Regarding that itself as our guru-dakṣiṇā, may we earn a name that truly means something, for having become your disciples! Bless us and give us leave." So saying, Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa bowed at his feet, rose, and stood ready. Because he had full faith within himself that these were no ordinary boys and would surely accomplish this task, Sāndīpa kissed their heads, blessed them, and sent them off. Mahārāja! Having received their guru's command, Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa went in haste to where the river meets the ocean, stood on the shore, and in a deep, resounding voice declared: "O Ocean! Will you give us our guru Sāndīpa's jewel of a son, or will you become subject to our punishment?" The moment they said this, the Ocean was startled; he touched the feet of Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa and said: "Svāmī! Forgive me. This is not my fault. By the sway of time, the boy, while bathing, slipped, was caught by the waves and dragged down into my depths. Meanwhile a rākṣasa named Pañcajana, who has dwelt within me for a very long time, swallowed that boy into his belly. This is what happened; what follows is as you wish." When the Ocean had submitted the truth just as it was, Kṛṣṇa said, "If that is so, very well," entered the depths of the ocean, tracked down the rākṣasa Pañcajana, fought him, and in a moment handed him over to Yama; then He split open his belly and looked,

but the guru's son was not to be seen within it. With still greater wrath He searched through all the entrails, and among them a conch appeared. Taking it in hand, and resolved to find out what had become of the guru's son, He went straight to Yama's realm, reached the city called Saṃyamana, and standing there at the city gate He blew the conch He had brought from Pañcajana's belly in the ocean. That sound, like a thunderbolt, tormented Yama's ears as if molten iron had been poured into them. Unable to bear it, Yama came furiously to the gate — and seeing Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa there, he bowed and entreated, "What is the reason for your coming?" When Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa commanded him to bring the guru's son and give him back, he at once joined his palms, said "As you will," commanded his retinue, and brought the pure guru's son and handed him over to Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa. At once Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa brought the boy back with them and handed him over to their guru Sāndīpa, and Gopāla asked, "Accept this as our guru-dakṣiṇā." How greatly Sāndīpa and his wife, the boy's parents, rejoiced at the sight of him is beyond telling. Having accomplished so mighty a task, having brought the dead guru's son back to life and given him to the guru as dakṣiṇā — no one, however foolish, would think the power and capability of that Gopāla to be ordinary! Sāndīpa thought, and believed, "These are truly Nara and Nārāyaṇa!" "Such beings became my disciples! I became their guru!" — so he swelled with joy within himself, feeling that his birth had been fulfilled. In his mind he bowed down to them; with tears of joy he embraced Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, kissed their heads, and they bade them farewell. Then Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, for their part, took leave of the guru and the guru's wife, mounted their chariot, and returned to Mathurāpura. Hearing of the greatness of the service done to the guru, the people of Mathurāpura praised Kṛṣṇa, and supreme joy

was theirs. Consider how great a guide to boys are the morals, the humility and the obedience in this Gopāla's way of learning, and how much joy they give to elders! O King! In every small deed, Gopāla keeps teaching the world one single inner meaning. Dull-witted human beings, unable to grasp it, draw wrong meanings from it. Is there anyone in the world who teaches a fish to swim? Likewise, is there anyone who teaches learning to God? Even so — though all learning lies within God Himself — it was only to teach today's students this lesson: the way one must obtain a guru, the way one must repay the debt to the guru, and the way one must experience the wealth of humility that belongs to learning, that He acted as the representative of students, practised it Himself, and handed down the ideal. Ah! How subtle is the divine secret!" — and Śuka let fall tears of joy.

In plain words

40. "Mṛtyor Mā Amṛtaṃ Gamaya" — "Lead Me from Death to Immortality" Mahārāja Parīkṣit, who had been listening to Kṛṣṇa's guru-bhakti, opened his eyes with a thrill running through him, looked at the great ṛṣi, and said: "Svāmī! Gopāla's līlās are wonders, each surpassing the last — great marvels! To shape and set the world right, God endures any toil, however great, and demonstrates His true power. Yet I cannot understand the inner meaning of this: that hardened Māyā should cover man's eyes and make him disbelieve in divinity." So Mahārāja Parīkṣit voiced his doubt. Faith in God Is Indeed Merit from Past Births! Śuka at once took it up: "Mahārāja! That is precisely the fruit of sin and merit from past births. When the fruit of merit earned in a past birth accumulates and gathers, sin is destroyed; such people believe in divinity, take refuge in divine power, and live making that alone their support. It is otherwise for those who committed terrible deeds in past births: the fruit of sin covers their eyes, so that God himself never occurs to them; they desire no good, become slaves to Māyā, regard the demonic nature as their own personality, and commit cruel deeds. Faith in God must be called merit from a past birth; it is not something that just springs up there and then." As soon as Śuka had given this answer, the great king, the fruits of merit and sin

being what he longed to come to know, asked him to tell another story of release from a curse, bound up with Kṛṣṇa's līlās. Then Śuka said, smiling: "Mahārāja! How many are the curses Gopāla released! All the childhood līlās told so far were themselves the releasing of those rākṣasas from their curses, were they not?" At this, the great king took it up and entreated: "I have heard that the felling of the maddi trees was most wondrous! If you would deign to tell of it in detail, I shall hear it and rejoice." Śuka, ready for everything, began to tell it. "O King! Though there were as many servants in Yaśodamma's house as could be needed, the housewife herself, following the tradition of the household, used to take care in person of all matters of the dairy and the harvest. Setting the milk with starter, churning, taking out the butter, keeping it safe — such tasks she used to do herself. Yaśodā's Anguish — The Binding to the Mortar One day she rose in the brahma-muhūrta, finished her morning duties, bathed and so on, took the pot of curd down from the hanging sling, set it in its stand, and, singing songs about God, took the churning-rod in hand and was churning the curd. Just then Gopāla came skipping to where His mother was churning the curd and tugged at the end of her sari. Yaśodā turned round with a start and looked — Gopāla! Leaving off the churning, she said, "My child! It hasn't even dawned yet! Go and sleep a while." Gopāla, with babbling, tangled words — "I'm hungry!" — started up His feigned wailing. Yaśodamma's heart melted: she put the churning-rod aside, put a lid on the curd pot, sat down right there and was giving Gopāla milk and stroking His head

when suddenly, from inside, came the sound of the milk-pots. "Perhaps the cat has knocked the pots over!" — and she lifted the boy off her lap, set Him down, and ran inside. Watching His mother go, angry that she had put Him down from her lap and disappointed that she had gone off without giving Him His fill of milk, He smashed the pot she had left in the middle of churning. He ate His fill of the butter floating on top and ran outside. Meanwhile Yaśodamma came back and looked: the curd pot was smashed. Not even a mustard-seed's worth of the cream in it could be seen. And Kṛṣṇa was not there at all. Recognising that all this was Gopāla's doing, she searched here and there. He was nowhere to be seen! She went outside and enquired of the neighbours. When they told her, "None of us knows; we haven't seen Him," fear took hold of Yaśodamma: "Afraid that His mother will beat Him for smashing the pot, the little child may have gone off somewhere in this darkness!" In her agitation she went searching from house to house — and in one house she beheld Gopāla, standing on the mortar, reaching for the butter pot on the hanging sling. "You little thief! So this is what you have been doing in everyone's houses? However much the gopikās told me, I didn't believe what they said — I scolded them instead and sent them away. Today, having seen it with my own eyes, I cannot believe my own eyes! All this time, how mistaken I have been. I must not let you off lightly any more. If a child is pampered because 'he's only a little boy,' in the end he falls into dangerous karmas. Now I must punish you properly, not forgive you. If people say that the child of a great house has turned thief like this, ill fame will spread not only to the parents who bore him but to the whole lineage. A stain will fall on our entire house." Overcome by an anguish and an anger such as she had never felt before, she took a rope in hand and ran off towards the mortar.

Meanwhile Gopāla, never letting her catch Him, slipping in here and slipping in there, led His mother round the whole village. Yaśodamma, being stout of body and never in the habit of running like that, grew tired and walked slowly, puffing and panting — and at the sight all the village folk, children, elders, women, were one single laughter. These mischievous antics of Gopāla gave them all the more joy. Kṛṣṇa Releases the Sons of Kubera from Their Curse Since Gopāla is the one who knows the whole world, He noticed that His mother was tired, and of His own accord let Himself be caught in her hands. Then Yaśodā — her hands would not rise to beat her son — held His hand firmly: "Beating you in the bazaar won't look good, you thief! Come home! I'll put a stop to your games." She took Him home, took out a big rope and tried to tie Him to the stone mortar; the rope was not enough, so she went further inside, brought another rope and joined it on. In this way, though she brought ropes many times over and tied them, she saw that it still fell a little short — yet she did not think, "This is His Māyā"; subject to Māyā herself, she somehow managed to tie one knot, went inside, and was attending to the household work. Meanwhile Kṛṣṇa rolled that mortar along and wedged it between two big maddi trees with two branches in the backyard. Hardly had Gopāla tugged at the mortar when, with the jolt, a maddi tree crashed to the ground with a cracking sound, as if collapsing roots and all into a heap. All the residents of Repalle heard that sound and came running to look: "A tree has fallen in Yaśodamma's house, though there is no rain and no wind!" Then Yaśodamma came and looked, and her heart gave a jolt. There among the branches of that tree little Gopāla could be seen. With a shriek Yaśodamma ran to Him, untied the bond, set Him on her hip and said, "A great peril has passed for my

Gopāla!" — so saying, she kept weeping: "Gopāla! Were you frightened? Alas! What a wicked woman I am!" From that tree two divine beings came forth, bowed to Gopāla, and said: "Svāmī! We are the sons of Kubera, bearing the names Nalakūbara and Maṇigrīva. Through Nārada's curse we had been dwelling here in the form of trees. With this day our release from the curse has come. If you permit, we shall now depart to our own abode." Having prayed thus, they vanished. Seeing these beings of wondrous form, the dwellers of Gokula were bewildered, and filled with wonder and joy. Though they heard of Gopāla's divinity from those divine beings themselves, like fire covered over with ash, bound by Māyā, they fell back into the delusion that Gopāla was just their own Nanda and Yaśodamma's son, their own cowherd lad, their friend — and went on living so." When Śuka had deigned to say this, Parīkṣit took it up and entreated: "Svāmī! How did Māyā come to have such mighty power? Who gave Māyā the quality that makes even Mādhava forget? What, in the end, is its svarūpa?" God Is Māyopādhi The great ṛṣi Śuka said: "O King! Māyā has no form as such. God is Māyopādhi — that is, God is the one who has put on Māyā itself as his upādhi. Its inner meaning, we come to know, is this: that which conceals God is precisely Māyā. That is its very quality. Whoever removes it, sets it aside, breaks through it — they alone behold God; they attain God. To mistake what is not as being — that is Māyā. Just as people see a mirage and mistake it for water, so they see their own saṅkalpas and mistake them for the actual thing. If there are no saṅkalpas at all to begin with, there is no room for the delusion one sees, is there!

Otherwise — how many times did Yaśodamma see Gopāla's divine powers with her own eyes and stand bewildered, and then again give room to the delusion that He was just a little boy? The root cause of this is the saṅkalpa itself: 'He is my son.' The body may be a son to the mother's body, but the dehi is related to the dehi in no way whatever. It is one svarūpa alone. Once one has come to know this truth through inquiry, why would there be any delusion about sense-objects? It is precisely because one does not inquire and does not come to know the matter that delusion grows and grows and wears away man's Buddhi" — so he taught. Leave the Delusion of Upādhis and Do Upāsana! "Ah! What a deed the divine upādhi performs! This, surely, must be the inner meaning of the Vedānta principles that teach, 'Leave the delusion of upādhis and do upāsana.' To speak of delusion about the upādhi is to say: it is what Māyā desires! It becomes clear that those who have the upādhi — that is, body-delusion — are the ones deluded by Māyā. For those who keep the body itself as their goal, the dehi does not appear, does it! Just as fire is not seen where ash has covered it, just as sight is lost when a film comes over the eyes, so when the Māyā called body-delusion has covered it, the dehi is not seen — of that there is no doubt whatever. Svāmī! Today my films have truly fallen away. The ash has flown off in the wind of your nectar-like teaching. This body-delusion, made of the five elements, is scattered to pieces. I am blessed! I am blessed!" So saying, Mahārāja Parīkṣit fell at Śuka's feet and bowed. Meanwhile, among the ṛṣis and the people gathered there, whisperings arose: "As the time draws near, one must leave the body one way or another, must one not? The life-breath leaves the body, but the mind does not leave. That, perhaps, is exactly why, so long as the mind's saṅkalpa has not vanished altogether, further births

are what ordinary human beings go on undergoing. Today our king has separated the mind from the body. Now, even though life remains in him, it will serve no further purpose. When one has merged the mind in Mādhava for ever, one's humanness does not even come to memory. The good teachings the great ṛṣi Śuka gave today apply not only to Parīkṣit alone but to every human being who has body-delusion. Just as the Veda-śāstras have declared, 'body-delusion is the cause of bondage; absorption in the Ātma is the cause of Mokṣa', it is becoming clear that the mind itself is the root cause of both. The śruti-statement "Mana eva manuṣyāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bandha-mokṣayoḥ" — 'the mind alone is the cause of bondage and Mokṣa for human beings' — is true!" So saying, all of them closed their eyes and offered prayers to God for some time. As the sun was setting, some took up their staffs and water-pots and moved off to the bank of the Gaṅgā for sandhyā-vandana.
