39So spoke the townsfolk, bound by their share of love. And the girl came out of the women's quarters, guarded by soldiers, towards Ambika's house. 40She went out on foot to see the tender feet of Bhavani, and all the while she was thinking steadily on Mukunda's lotus feet. 41Keeping silence, with her mothers, ringed by her friends, guarded by the king's brave men in armour with their weapons raised, while drums and conches and tabors and trumpets and kettledrums were struck. 42Thousands of the chief courtesans went with all kinds of gifts and offerings, and brahmins' wives well decked in garlands and scents and cloth and ornaments,
43and women singing, and men praising, and singers, and players of instruments, and bards and heralds and reciters: they went ringing the bride round. 44Coming to the goddess's house, having washed her lotus hands and feet and sipped water, clean and quiet, she went in before Ambika. 45The old brahmin women, who knew the rule, had the girl make her salutation to Bhavani, the wife of Bhava, with Bhava beside her.
