One day Vijaya mounted his chariot with the monkey on its banner, took up the Gandiva bow and the two quivers whose arrows are never used up, and in his armour, with Krsna, that killer of the enemy's heroes went into the woods and forest to roam, thick with beasts of prey and with deer. There he shot with arrows tigers, boars, buffaloes, antelope, sarabhas, wild oxen, rhinoceroses, deer, hares and porcupines. The servants took those that were fit for the offering to the king, since a holy day was near. Arjuna, caught by thirst and worn out, went to the Yamuna. There the two great chariot fighters, the two Krsnas, sipped and drank the clear water, and saw a girl walking there, lovely to look at.

Sent by his friend, Phalguna went up to that best of women, fair-hipped, fine-toothed, with a lovely face, and asked her: Who are you, whose are you, fair one, and where from, and what do you mean to do? I think you are wanting a husband. Tell me everything, lovely one.
