When the horse sacrifices were over, the king who was your grandfather, hearing the dharma the Bhagavan taught, asked this of the Unfallen. The Bhagavan, the lord, pleased with him who wanted to hear, spoke to him: he who came down in the line of Yadu for the highest good of men. Bhagavan said: Whomever I favour, I take his wealth away slowly; and then, being poor, his own people leave him, grieved with grief upon grief. When his effort has come to nothing, and he is sick of the hunger for wealth, and he has made friendship with those who hold to me, then I shall show him my favour. That Brahman is supreme, fine, pure awareness, real, without end. So people leave me, who am very hard to worship, and worship others.

Then, having got the fortune of a kingdom from those who are quickly pleased, they are puffed up, drunk and heedless; they grow proud and hold the givers of the boons in contempt. Brahma, Visnu, Siva and the rest are lords of the curse and of the favour. Siva and Brahma curse and favour at once, dear one, but the Unfallen does not.
