Kesava, when you taught that yoga to Sanaka and the others, in what form did you teach it? That is the form I want to know. Bhagavan said: The sons born of the mind of the Golden Womb, Sanaka and the rest, asked their father about the subtle going of yoga, which turns to one thing only. Master, the mind goes into the strands and the strands go into the mind. How is the one to be given up for the other by a man who wants release and wants to cross over? Bhagavan said: Asked in this way, the great god, the self-born, the maker of beings, though he thought hard, could not come at the seed of the question, for his mind was on works.

That god thought of me, wanting to cross to the far side of the question; and I came then into his presence in the form of a swan. Seeing me, they came up and bowed at my feet, and putting Brahma in front of them they asked: Who are you? Uddhava, hear from me what I said to them then, when the sages, who wanted to know what is real, had asked me that.
