1Bhagavan said: One who is filled with learning and with hearing, who has himself in hand and does not go by inference, knowing this to be maya and nothing more, should lay down even his knowledge in me. 2For the one who knows, I alone am what is wanted, his own end and the reason he holds good, his heaven and his release. No other end than me is dear to him. 3Those who have come through by knowledge and full knowing know my highest station. And so the knower is dearest of all to me: by his knowing he carries me. 4Austerity, the holy fords, the muttering of prayer, giving, and the other things that make clean are not enough to bring about that attainment which a fraction of knowledge brings about.
5So, having come to know your own self along with knowledge, Uddhava, filled with knowledge and full knowing, worship me out of devotion. 6Having worshipped me with the sacrifice of knowledge and full knowing, the self within the self, me who am the lord of every sacrifice, the sages came through.
