Bhagavan said: Not harming, truth, not stealing, not clinging, modesty, not hoarding, belief, chastity, silence, steadiness, forgiveness, fearlessness. Cleanness, the muttering of prayer, austerity, the fire offering, trust, the receiving of guests, the honouring of me, going about the holy fords, working for another's good, contentment, the serving of the teacher. These are held to be the restraints together with the rules, twelve of each. Attended to by men, dear one, they yield whatever is wanted of them. Calm is the standing of the understanding on me; control is the holding in of the senses. Patience is the bearing down of pain; firmness is the conquest of tongue and loins.

The highest giving is the laying down of the rod. Austerity is held to be the giving up of desire. Bravery is the conquest of one's own nature, and truth is seeing evenly. Right speech the poets have named as speech that is kind and true. Cleanness is not being caught in works; the giving up is called renunciation. Dharma is the wealth men should want. I am the sacrifice, the most blessed. The fee is the handing on of knowledge. The highest strength is the holding of the breath.
