In this age too, brahmin, the Bhagavan, who brings the worlds into being, was asked by Brahma and Siva and the other guardians of the worlds to keep dharma safe; and the mighty one came down, greatly favoured one, from Parasara in Satyavati, by a portion of a portion, and made the Veda four-fold. He took up the heaps of the Rc, the Atharvan, the Yajus and the Saman, group by group, and made four gatherings of the mantras, like strings of jewels. Calling four pupils to him, brahmin, that mighty one of great mind gave one gathering to each one of them. To Paila he spoke the first gathering, the one called of many verses; and to the one named Vaisampayana the set of the Yajus, called the recited.

To Jaimini he spoke the gathering of the Samans, the one of the singers; and to his own pupil Sumantu the one named of Atharvan and Angiras.
