The praise of the sun· Verses 67–73

 ।

Om. I bow to the Bhagavan, to the Sun. By your own form as the self and your own form as time you are within the hearts of the four kinds of gathered beings, from Brahma down to a clump of grass, and outside them as well; and like space you are not shut off by anything that limits you, but you, one alone, carry this journeying of the worlds along, by the taking up of the waters and the letting of them go, through the crowd of years built up out of the moments and the instants and the blink of an eye. Bull among the gods, Savitr, you burn up there. Let us hold in mind together the disc of the burning one, the Bhagavan, who parches away the very seed of all wrong and crookedness in those who wait on him day after day, at every pressing, by the rule of what has been handed down.

It is he who here sets going the mind and the senses and the crowd of breaths, which are not the self, in the masses of things that stand and things that move, whose own dwelling-place he is: he himself, the ruler within the self. It is he who, seeing this world swallowed by the python that goes by the name of darkness, with its terrible open mouth, lying like something dead and out of its senses, in pity, being of all the most merciful, lifts it up by a look alone, and day after day, at every pressing, sets it going in the good, in that standing in the self which goes by the name of one's own duty. Like a lord of the earth he goes about raising fear in the wicked, and here and there the guardians of the quarters bring him what is due to him, with their hands folded like the cup of a lotus.

And so, revered one, I come near to your two lotus feet, which the teachers of the three worlds bow down to, wanting the Yajus verses whose hour has not gone stale. Praised in this way, the Bhagavan, Hari the sun, who had taken on the form of a horse, was won over and gave the sage the Yajus verses whose hour had not gone stale.
