In plain words

There is *sūtak* in the water, sūtak on the land, sūtak in whatever comes to be. Sūtak at a birth and sūtak again at a death, and sūtak has ruined the people. Tell me, pandit, who is pure? Chant such a knowing as this, my friend. *(refrain)* There is sūtak in the eyes, sūtak in the speech, sūtak in the ears. Standing up and sitting down, sūtak clings, and sūtak falls on the cooking. Everyone knows the way to be caught; only one here and there knows the way out. Says Kabīr, whoever turns Rām over in the heart, for him there is no sūtak. *sūtak*, the defilement a birth or a death lays on a household, keeping it from worship and from its own kitchen for a set number of days.
