The mother is defiled, the father too is defiled, and defiled is the fruit they bore. Defiled they come, defiled they go, and the luckless die defiled. Tell me, pandit, what place is clean, where I may sit down and eat my food? *(refrain)* The tongue is defiled, its speech defiled, the ears and the eyes all defiled. The defilement of the senses does not come off; they are scorched in the fire of Brahm. The fire too is defiled, the water is defiled, and defiled the seat where the cooking was done. With a defiled ladle he served it out, and defiled he sat and ate. The cow dung is defiled, the cooking square is defiled, and defiled the lines drawn round it. Says Kabīr, clean are the men in whom true understanding has settled. *jūṭhā*, made unclean by another's touch or another's mouth; it is the word for a leftover on a plate.
