In plain words
Am I the mass of mean hair that grows on me? Or the spread of skin over which that hair is laid? Or the festering flesh packed in and wrapped within the skin? Or the stream of blood that seeps within that festering flesh? Or the bones, divided into parts, that stand here and there? Or the lump of stinking marrow within the bones? Or the slimy grease that runs within? Or the row of worms that slowly creep? Or the heap of filth placed in the water? Or the rope of sinews, placed and tied? Or the sickness within the body that torments it and never leaves? I cannot tell; I do not know which of these I am. I searched for myself in everything, and in nothing do I find myself. Long ago, with the mountain for a matchless bow, you fed the city to the fire. One day, with the eye for a weapon, you looked at Kāma so that he became fine dust. The fire-mouthed poison rose up in the universe so that the undying immortals would die, and you made it holy nectar. You rose so tall that the two who searched for you were afraid. For the sake of the boy you raged at Death. In the pleasure groves of sandal and pine, campaka and vakuḷa, the sun does not get through, and new light budded from the nine gems shines out. O you of Tiruviṭaimarutu, encircled by the Poṉṉi, which guards merit for countless crores of hosts of sages! O rider of the fighting bull! O you who share yourself with the lady! O Lord of Gaṅgā! Your divine, holy grace came to hand. It tore away the film of māyam, and I gained the pure eye of ñāṉam. Then I too saw your greatness. And as I saw, I saw myself too, I saw others too, I saw your state in all its fullness. How wonderful! People who do not see you are of such a nature that they do not see even themselves.
