Śiva's Portion
The seer Atri stood on one foot for a hundred years on Mount Ṛkṣa, praying to the Lord of the world for offspring, and the three lords of the gods, Brahmā the creator, Viṣṇu and Śiva, came to him together. Sons will be born to you who are portions of us, they said. Then Atri's wife Anasūyā bore three sons: Soma from Brahmā's portion, Datta from Viṣṇu's, and Durvāsa from Śiva's.
Durvāsa, the portion of Śiva, wandered the earth, keeping an ascetic's vow to live like a madman.
