Sight for Sañjaya
When the great war was about to begin, Vyāsa came to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who sat grieving over the wrong his sons had done, and spoke to him in private. King, the time of your sons and of the other kings has come, he said. They will meet in battle and kill one another. Do not grieve; it is the turning of time. If you wish to see the battle, I will give you sight. Watch the war.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said, Best of brahmin seers, I do not want to see my own kin killed. But I would like to hear about the battle, all of it, by your power. So Vyāsa gave the boon to Sañjaya, the king's charioteer. Sañjaya will tell you of this war, he said. Nothing in the battle will be hidden from him. With divine sight he will know everything, in the open or in secret, by night or by day, even what is only thought in the mind. Weapons will not cut him, weariness will not touch him, and he will come out of this war alive. And I will spread the fame of all these Kurus and Pāṇḍavas. Do not grieve. This was ordained long ago and cannot be held back. Where there is dharma, there is victory.
