The works of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya

Aparokṣānubhūtiḥ

Verse 135

कार्ये कारणताऽऽयाता कारणे न हि कार्यता ।कारणत्वं स्वतो गच्छेत्कार्याभावे विचारतः ॥ १३५ ॥

In plain words

A cause is a cause only because of its effect — that status comes to it from the effect's side. The cause, in itself, holds no effect-hood at all. So when inquiry shows there is no effect, being-a-cause falls away by itself.

Close to the Sanskrit

In the effect, causality has arrived; in the cause there is indeed no effect-hood. Causality would depart of itself when, through inquiry, the effect is absent.
