In plain words
A man looks at a fire and takes it for a jewel; he looks at a jewel and takes it for fire. In just the same way he looks at the Self and sees a body there — through his contact with ignorance.
Close to the Sanskrit
Just as a person sees gem-ness in fire, or indeed fire-ness in a gem, so too does he see body-ness in the Self, through association with ignorance.
