स य एषोऽन्तर्हृदय आकाश ।तस्मि-न्नयं पुरुषो मनोमयः ।अमृतो हिरण्मयः ।अन्तरेण तालुके ।य एष स्तन इवाव-लम्बते ।सेन्द्रयोनि ।यत्रासौ केशान्तोविवर्तते ।व्यपोह्य शीर्षकपाले ।भूरित्यग्नौप्रतितिष्ठति ।भुव इति वायौ ॥ १ ॥

There is a luminous space within the heart; within it dwells the conscious Self, golden and immortal, formed of mind. Between the palates, where the uvula dangles like a teat, lies the gateway to the divine. Passing up through the crown where the hair parts, 'bhūḥ' finds its rest in fire, and 'bhuvaḥ' in the wind.

That which is this space within the heart, in it resides this person consisting of mind, immortal, golden. Between the palates, where that like a nipple hangs down, that is the birth-place of Indra. Where that hair-end turns, having parted the skull bones, 'bhuh' establishes itself in fire, 'bhuvah' in wind.
