विशेषणयोगिनि च, तदा विशेषणस्यार्थवत्त्वम्, न ह्येकस्मिन्नेव वस्तुनि, विशेषणान्तरायोगात्, यथा असावेक आदित्य इति, तथा एकमेव ब्रह्म, न ब्रह्मान्तराणि, येभ्यो विशेष्येत नीलोत्पलवत् ।न, लक्षणार्थत्वाद्विशेषणानाम् ।नाय दोष ।कस्मात्² लक्षणार्थप्रधानानि विशेषणानि, न विशेषणप्रधानान्येव ।क पुनर्लक्षणलक्ष्ययोर्विशेषणविशेष्ययोर्वा विशेष ? उच्यते ।सजातीयेभ्य एव निवर्तकानि विशेषणानि विशेष्यस्य, लक्षण तु सर्वत एव, यथा अवकाशप्रदात्राकाशमिति ।लक्षणार्थ च वाक्यमित्यवोचाम ॥

When an object has multiple attributes, those descriptors have a clear purpose. But in a single, undivided reality, another attribute is impossible. Just as there is only one sun, so Brahman is one alone, with no second Brahman from which it could be distinguished, unlike a blue lotus among other flowers. Yet this objection does not apply here, because scriptural descriptors serve to define Brahman's essential nature rather than separate it from peers. What distinguishes a defining mark from a mere qualifier? Qualifiers set an object apart from others of the same class, whereas a definition reveals its nature against everything whatsoever—just as space is defined simply as that which grants room. We have already explained that such sentences serve entirely to define reality.

And when possessing attributes, then the attribute has a purpose; for in a single entity indeed, there is the impossibility of another attribute, just as that sun is one, so Brahman is one alone, not other brahmans by which it might be qualified, like a blue lotus. No, because attributes are for the purpose of definition. This is no flaw. Why? Attributes have definition-purpose as primary, not merely distinguishing purpose. What then is the distinction between definition and defined, or attribute and qualified? It is stated: attributes are restrictors of the qualified only from things of the same class, but a definition is from all sides indeed, just as space is defined as that which grants space. And we stated that the sentence is for the purpose of definition.
