शं सुखं प्राणवृत्तेरहश्चाभिमानी देवतात्मा मित्रः न अस्माकं भवतु ।तथैव अपानवृत्तेः रात्रेश्चाभिमानी देव तात्मा वरुणः , चक्षुषि आदित्ये चाभिमानी अर्यमा , बले इन्द्रः , वाचि बुद्धौ च बृहस्पतिः , विष्णुः उरुक्रमः विस्तीर्ण क्रमः पादयोरभिमानी , एवमाद्या अध्यात्मदेवता शं न ,

Śam means happiness. Mitra, the conscious deity presiding over the prana breath and daytime, may he be auspicious to us. Similarly Varuna, presiding over the apana breath and nighttime; Aryaman, presiding over the eye and the sun; Indra in physical strength; Brihaspati in speech and intellect; and Vishnu of vast strides, presiding over the feet—may these and all other presiding deities be auspicious to us.
