Question and answer 20

In plain words

Disciple: The witness is many and limited because the jīvas differ. How can it be one with Brahman, which is one?

Guru: The space in a pot, many and limited as it is, is not other than the great space; it remains the great space itself. In the same way the witness, many and limited as it seems, is not separate from Brahman; it remains the very form of Brahman, and so it is one with it. Therefore know: 'I am Brahman.'

Word for word

Disciple: For the witness, which by the difference of jīvas is many and limited, how can oneness with Brahman, which is one, be?

Guru: As the pot-space, which is many and limited, not becoming other than the great space, remains as the great space itself, so the witness, which is many and limited, not undergoing separation from Brahman, remaining as the very form of Brahman, oneness can be. Therefore know: 'I am Brahman.'
