Prose-section 41
In plain words
Only one who has turned away from desire can, out of longing for liberation, come to abide in Brahman and cut both the inner attachment to the ego and the rest and the outer attachment to outer things; so only for him are inner and outer renunciation both accomplished. The one whose dispassion is complete reaches samādhi; the one in samādhi reaches firm knowledge; the one who knows reality reaches liberation; and the one who is free reaches everlasting bliss. So dispassion is the main road to the joy of union with liberation, the beloved, and no other cause of happiness is to be found anywhere. When this dispassion is joined to very pure knowledge of the Self it surely gives the joy of liberation’s kingdom. A bird needs both its wings; to climb to the upper terrace of liberation a person needs both dispassion and knowledge, and without either one there is no liberation. So cut your desire for objects, which are like poison and lead to ruin. Throw far away your pride in caste, family and stage of life, and all your actions. Stop taking this unreal body and the rest as ‘I’. In truth you are the witness, stainless Brahman without a second; keep your attention always in your own Self.
Word for word
Only the dispassionate person, through desire for liberation, attains establishment in Brahman and can remove inward attachment to ego and the rest and outward attachment to external objects. Only for that person are both inward and outward renunciation established. One with complete dispassion attains samādhi; one established in samādhi attains firm knowledge; the knower of reality attains liberation; and the liberated one eternal bliss. Therefore dispassion is the principal way to enjoy happiness in union with liberation, pictured as a beloved. No other cause bringing happiness is seen anywhere. When this dispassion joins exceedingly pure Self-knowledge, it certainly grants the happiness of liberation’s sovereignty. Like a bird’s two wings, dispassion and knowledge are indispensable for ascending to liberation’s upper terrace. If either is absent, liberation is not attained. Therefore cut desire for poison-like objects, the cause of ruin. Cast far away identification with class, family and stage of life, and all actions. Abandon ‘I’-identification with this unreal body and the rest. In truth you are the witness, stainless non-dual Brahman alone. Always keep attention in your own Self.
