Prose-section 45

In plain words

Knowing that it is a mirage makes one turn back; not knowing makes one run toward the water. In the same way, the fruit of Self-knowledge is the end of unreal sorrow, lasting contentment and the bliss beyond compare that shines of itself as oneself, and the fruit of ignorance is chasing after unreal objects full of sorrow. The wise one has cut the knot of ignorance in the Heart at its root with the sword of knowledge and has no desire left for objects. How could he go back to doing the many small things he did while deluded? What object is left that could set him going?

Word for word

Withdrawal from or pursuit of mirage water and the like are respectively the results of knowledge and ignorance. Similarly, Self-knowledge bears the fruits of cessation of unreal suffering, eternal contentment and incomparable bliss always manifest as oneself; ignorance bears the fruit of pursuing unreal, suffering-laden objects. The knower, free of desire for objects, has cut away at the root the Heart’s knot of ignorance with the sword of knowledge. How would he again perform the many petty actions formerly undertaken during delusion? What object remains as the cause of such pursuit?
