Prose-section 49
In plain words
In his seeing, only Brahman shines: without beginning or end, complete, eternal, truth, knowledge, solid bliss; actionless, changeless, beyond measure, without limit, the one inner taste; something that can be neither thrown away nor taken up; exceedingly subtle, filling everything within and without; resting on nothing, without qualities, stainless, without parts or distinctions, being alone; something the mind cannot settle and speech cannot say as ‘it is like this’, beyond both; established by itself, pure, without a second. Here there is not the least of the difference that appears as many things. Great ones, renunciants who had given up enjoyment and the wish for it and had calm, self-control and the rest, knew this one nature in the Heart through the yoga of the Self, and gained the liberation of supreme bliss. So, my son, if you too see without any doubt, with the eye of knowledge that dawns in motionless samādhi, the supreme Self, supreme bliss, which is your very own nature, then no second thoughts will ever again arise about what you have heard. Drop the delusion of difference that the mind imagines, and become one who knows, free, with nothing left to do. Teachers, like the scriptures, teach in a general way. Bondage and freedom, hunger and its satisfaction, sickness and health: each person knows these for himself, and others can only guess. In the same way the discerning must cross the sea of becoming by his own experience, which comes by the grace of the supreme Lord. For release from the bondage your own ignorance imagined, and for becoming the Self that is being, awareness and bliss, the authorities are these: scripture, reasoning, the teacher’s word, and your own experience within.
Word for word
In the knower’s vision, self-established, pure, non-dual Brahman alone shines: without beginning or end, complete, eternal, reality, knowledge, dense bliss; actionless, changeless, immeasurable, limitless, inward and of one essence; incapable of being rejected or acquired, exceedingly subtle, filling everywhere inwardly and outwardly; without another support, without qualities, stainless, partless, undifferentiated existence alone. It cannot be determined by mind or stated by speech as ‘it is like this’; it is beyond speech and mind. There is not even the least difference here, though it appears manifold. Great-souled renunciants, relinquishing enjoyment and desire for enjoyment, endowed with tranquillity, restraint and the rest, knew this one nature in the Heart through Self-yoga and attained liberation of supreme bliss. Therefore, son, if you too directly know without doubt the supremely blissful supreme Self that is your own nature, through the vision of knowledge arising in motionless samādhi, no uncertainty will afterwards arise concerning the meaning heard. Remove the mind-imagined delusion of difference and become knowing, free and fulfilled. Teachers, like revelation, instruct in a general way. Bondage, liberation, hunger, satisfaction, illness and health are known by oneself; others infer them. Likewise, the discriminating seeker must cross the ocean of becoming through his own direct experience, received by the supreme Lord’s grace. Concerning release from bondage imagined through ignorance of oneself and abidance as the existence-consciousness-bliss Self, revelation, reasoning, the teacher’s word and one’s inward direct experience are the means of knowledge.
