Prose-section 59

In plain words

‘Stone, wood, grass, grain, a mat, a cloth, a pot: burnt, they all become earth. In the same way the body and every other seen condition, burnt in the fire of knowledge, become knowledge and dissolve into Brahman, as darkness dissolves in the light of the sun. When the pot breaks, the space in it is simply space. When the conditions are gone, the knower who was free while living, shining as Brahman in Brahman, merges like milk in milk, water in water, oil in oil, and shines for ever as one.’

Word for word

‘As stone, wood, grass, grain, mat, cloth, pot and the rest, when burnt, become earth alone, all perceived adjuncts such as the body are burnt by the fire of knowledge, become knowledge in nature and dissolve in Brahman like darkness in sunlight. As pot-space becomes great space when the pot breaks, when the adjunct disappears the knower liberated while living, shining as Brahman, merges in Brahman like milk in milk, water in water and oil in oil, and always shines as one.’
