Prose-section 61
In plain words
When the disciple had heard all his teacher said, he bowed many times, took his leave and went away full of joy. And the teacher, immersed in the ocean of Brahman’s bliss, went about everywhere to make the world holy. So, in the form of a dialogue between teacher and disciple, the nature of the Self has been made known, that seekers of freedom may understand it easily. May the best of renunciants take this helpful teaching to heart: those who seek freedom and trust scripture, whose minds are calm, who have turned from the pleasures of the world, and whose minds have been cleansed of every fault by duties done without desire for reward. In the terrible forest of saṃsāra, living beings are scorched by the fierce sun of the three kinds of suffering; tormented by thirst they wander lost in the desert in the hope of water, and suffer. To bring them happiness, the revered world-teacher Śaṅkara Bhagavatpāda Ācārya graciously gave this book, the Vivekacūḍāmaṇi, which shows them the ocean of nectar, the bliss of non-dual Brahman, lying very close at hand. It will surely give the everlasting bliss of liberation; there is no doubt. May all be well. Long live the revered teacher Śaṅkara Bhagavatpāda. The Vivekacūḍāmaṇi is complete. Om. That is the Real. May this be offered to Brahman.
Word for word
Hearing the teacher’s words thus spoken, the disciple offered many salutations, received the teacher’s leave and departed joyfully. The teacher too, immersed in the ocean of Brahman-bliss, wandered everywhere to sanctify the world. Thus the Self’s nature was disclosed through a teacher-disciple dialogue so that seekers of liberation might understand easily. May excellent renunciants who seek liberation, trust revelation, are peaceful in mind and dispassionate towards worldly pleasure, and have become free of mental defects through prescribed action without desire for reward, cherish this beneficial teaching. Beings wander and suffer in the desert through longing for water, greatly afflicted by the torment of thirst caused by the fierce heat of threefold suffering in the terrible forest of saṃsāra. To bring them happiness by revealing the very near ocean of nectar, non-dual Brahman-bliss, the revered world-teacher Śaṅkara Bhagavatpāda Ācārya graciously bestowed this happiness-giving treatise, Vivekacūḍāmaṇi. It certainly bestows the everlasting bliss of liberation. There is no doubt. Auspiciousness. May the revered teacher Śaṅkara Bhagavatpāda flourish. Vivekacūḍāmaṇi is concluded. Om, That, the Real; may this be an offering to Brahman.
