In plain words
A woman in love, her love grown by hearing of her hero’s virtues, longing to see him as the one thing most worth winning, her heart not her own day and night, makes vows to the gods, sends messengers, and tells her state through love letters, and so she stays, her slender body wasting with separation. Then, by the power of those vows, her beloved, unlooked for, is seen standing beside her; but since his particular excellences have not come into her , he is brought down to being like anyone else, and the seeing of her beloved, though it has come about, does not fill her heart. So too, though one’s own self, the Lord of all, is always shining, that shining does not bring fullness to the heart; for that self too has not been held in awareness as joined with the excellence of the highest sovereignty, marked by its own unhindered , knowing all, doing all and the rest; so its story has become like that of a pot or the like that shines. But when, from the messenger’s words, or from recognising his marks, or by some other means, she takes those excellences to heart and holds them in awareness, then at that instant, as a flower opens wondrously, she comes at once to a fullness beyond telling; and in the savour of enjoying him again and again she finds still other restings. In the same way, with the self: when, from the ’s word, or from recognising the marked as knowledge and action and the like, the excellence of the highest sovereignty is taken to heart, then , whose self is fullness, has that for its mark; and in the savour of practising , the gaining of . So it is of Him alone that gives the higher and the lower attainment.
This helps all and bears great fruit. To set people in motion by an awareness that sets them going, marked by the trust born through remembering its excellence, by joining it with a well-known lineage and by the fame of a name, he shows its close with his father’s name too:
For the effortless attainment of people, this has been set out by , son of .
“Of people”: of any creature at all; there is no looking to birth or the like here; so its helping all is told. “Effortless attainment”: so that attainment, higher and lower, would come without effort; so its great fruit is told. “The venerable , son of , our ’s , made this ”: by the fame of this people are set in motion, and through being set in motion they are graced; so both names are given. “This”: brought home to the heart by hundreds of reasonings. So, all is well.
“This short gloss on the , which reflects on the meaning of the and does not break, has been composed by .” “The meanings of sentence, , word, and the true find their use for one’s own self through this, our own : for none but the one sun can bring the earth’s juices and its waters to work in feeding the crops.
“He who, not knowing the , wishes to sort out something else: what could that creature of the elements say to the question, ‘Who are you?’”
Here ends the of the composed by the venerable master , together with the commentary called the composed by the venerable master . The glorious is complete.
