In plain words
It is said elsewhere too: What he has done before turns him back, as waves turn upon a great river; the coming of death upon him is as hard to ward off as the tide of the sea. He is bound like a beast with the ropes made of the good and evil fruits of deeds; he has as little freedom as a man in prison, and stands in as much fear as one within the realm of Yama. He is intoxicated as a man drunk with wine is intoxicated without wine; he is whirled about as though seized by evil; he is bitten as by a great serpent; he is blinded by passion as by great darkness; he is a thing of illusion like a conjuring-show; he is a false seeing like a dream; he is without pith like the trunk of a plantain; he is a costume of a moment like an actor's; he is a false delight like a painted wall. And so it is said: "The objects of sound and touch and the rest stand there as though they were no objects at all; and the elemental self, clinging to them, does not remember the highest state."
