In plain words

It sits there. A hill. No mind in it at all. And yet — what it does is a wonder, and nobody's knowing can get to the bottom of it. From the time I was small the word Arunachalam stood in my mind as something enormous. I had no idea what it meant. Someone eventually told me: that is Tiruvannamalai, a town. Knowing that did nothing. Then it put a bewilderment in my mind and drew me over to it, and the moment I came close I saw what it was. The Motionless.

Word for word

It abides as a hill devoid of consciousness. Ah! A wonder — its action is hard for anyone's knowing to know. From my small age that name, Arunachalam, shone in my mind as something exceedingly great, and I did not know its meaning. Even having been made known by someone that it was Tiruvannamalai — when, having caused bewilderment in my mind, it drew me to its side, at this moment of attaining the near side, I saw it as the Motionless.
