Sea, cloud, rain, stream, sea — one circuit across one landscape. The rain falls on the hill and the water starts back; nothing in the picture is at rest.

Water does not decide to return

In plain words

Water goes up off the sea, comes down as rain, and starts back. Dam it, divert it — it does not stop until it is sea again. Body and life came up out of you the same way. They will not stop either, whatever roads they wander down, until they get back to you. A bird can fly about in the open all it likes. There is nowhere out there to rest. There is only the ground. So let the life go home by the road it came out on. That is what it owes. And then it is sea again — the sea that is joy. Arunachala, mountain that holds up the earth.

Word for word

The water poured down by the cloud that rises from the sea will not be stopped, though it be obstructed, until it reaches the sea's own place. Body and life, that rise in you, will not stop until they reach you, though they wander in the many paths they meet. Though it roam the open space, there is no resting place; for the bird there is no place to be other than the ground. When the life goes by the way it came, which is its duty, it joins you, the sea of joy, O Aruna mountain!
