Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Partha, there is nothing at all in the three worlds that I must do, nothing unattained that I need attain; yet I continue in action.

Word for word

For me, O Pārtha, there is nothing at all to be done in the three worlds, nothing unattained to be attained; and yet I continue in action.

The commentators

Bhagavadgītābhāṣyam

In plain words

If you are still divided on this — on whether holding the world together is really something you must do — then why not look at me? —

"There is nothing for me" — nothing that is mine to do, Pārtha — "nothing at all" in the three worlds; not the smallest task waits on me. Why? Because there is nothing left unreached that I still have to reach. And even so, I go on working.

Close to the Sanskrit

If here, on your part, there is a contrary position regarding the obligatoriness of sustaining the world, then why do you not look at me? —

"For me" — that is, mine — O Pārtha, "there is not" — is not found — anything to be done, "in the three worlds" too, "anything at all" — not even the least thing. Why? Because there is nothing "unattained" — unobtained — that is "to be attained" — to be reached; and even so, I do engage in action.

Gītā Vāhini

In plain words

“The wheel of the world turns in this way, and one must follow it, mind you! Listen carefully to one thing, brother-in-law! In all three worlds there is no work that I am bound to do. There is nothing I have gained, nothing I have yet to gain. Yet I Myself am always engaged in karma. Reflect on this! If I left off and did no karma, the world would utterly perish. Not only that, I Myself would be the cause of the world's ruin. With a Buddhi established in the Ātma, offer all karmas to Me; free of every aim and every mamakāra, give up this agitation, and fight,” he commanded.
