Bhagavadgītābhāṣyam

In plain words

And what do they worship for? Here is the answer —

To be free of old age and death — that is what they are after. Taking shelter in Me, the Supreme Lord, holding their minds fixed on Me, they give themselves fully to the effort. And what they come to know is Brahman itself, the Supreme; they come to know, completely, adhyātma — everything that concerns the inward Self; and they come to know karma too, all of it, with nothing left half-understood.

Close to the Sanskrit

For what purpose do they worship? Thus it is said —

For liberation from old age and death: for the sake of liberation from old age and death — taking refuge in Me, the Supreme Lord, with minds concentrated on Me, being so, they strive, that is, they exert effort — those who so strive; they know that Brahman which is supreme; they know entire, complete, adhyātma — the entity whose scope is the inner Self — that they know; and they know karma entire, complete.

Gītā Vāhini

In plain words

“Brother-in-law! Arjuna! Whoever takes refuge in Me and does sādhana in order to gain release from the sorrows of old age and death comes to know Brahman, the whole of adhyātma, and karma. Whoever worships Me together with adhibhūta, adhidaiva and adhiyajña has ‘samāhita citta-vṛtti’, and even at the time of leaving the body thinks of Me without forgetting. For that reason such a one attains Me alone; that is, he enters into Me.”

“Brother-in-law! Every man has, or may have, the wish to escape these two sorrows, old age and death. But what use is that alone? Practice that fits the wish must be there, above all, must it not? Truly, the one who acts with such intense anguish, casting all his responsibilities upon God: his sorrow I bring to an end with the rays of My grace. But those who take refuge in worldly objects, which are the very forms of sorrow: their sorrow will never end, and no one else can end it. For those who do not take refuge in the ‘Lord of Māyā’ but take refuge in the ‘objects of Māyā’, how will sorrow end? How will Ānanda be attained? If these two do not happen, where is the path to Mukti?” So Kṛṣṇa said.
