In plain words
'Adhibhūta' has to do with the whole realm of living creatures. What is it, then? 'Kṣara' means the perishable — whatever decays; and 'bhāva' means any created thing at all, whatever has been born. That is adhibhūta. 'Puruṣa' — either because everything is filled by him, or because he dwells in the body — is Hiraṇyagarbha, seated within the sun, who breathes life into the senses of every creature; he is what is meant by 'adhidaivata.' And 'adhiyajña' is the deity who presides over every sacrifice, called Viṣṇu, exactly as the scripture says: 'sacrifice, truly, is Viṣṇu' (Taittirīya Saṃhitā 1.7.4). And that Viṣṇu is none other than I. Right here, in this very body, whatever sacrifice takes place, I am the one presiding over it. Because sacrifice can only be carried out through a body, it rests on the body as its ground, best of the embodied.
Close to the Sanskrit
'Adhibhūta' arises with reference to the class of living creatures. What is that? 'Kṣara': it perishes, therefore 'kṣara' means perishable, destructible; 'bhāva' means whatever born entity — this is the meaning. 'Puruṣa': because by him everything is filled, or because he lies in the body — puruṣa is Hiraṇyagarbha situated within the sun, the one who enlivens the sense-faculties of all living creatures; he is 'adhidaivata.' 'Adhiyajña' is the deity called Viṣṇu, presiding over all sacrifice, as in the scripture 'sacrifice indeed is Viṣṇu' (Taittirīya Saṃhitā 1.7.4). That Viṣṇu is indeed I myself; here, in this body, whatever sacrifice there is, of that I am the presiding deity. For sacrifice, being accomplished through the body, is inherent in the body; thus it has the body as its basis, O best of the embodied.
▸Gītā Vāhini· Prabodha 15 · Passage 4
In plain words
Not satisfied with Kṛṣṇa's consolation, Arjuna prayed, “Explain the remaining three too, free me from the grip of my doubts, wipe out the darkness and show me Your form, Svāmī!” Then the Paramātma, His heart moved with compassion, stroked his back and said, “Brother-in-law, do not worry! I shall tell you; listen. As for “adhibhūta”, it is not something fraught with great problems; it is quite a simple matter. Every name and form in the world that perishes is what they call adhibhūta.”
▸Gītā Vāhini· Prabodha 15 · Passage 9
In plain words
“It has now become plain, has it not, that along with Brahman, adhyātma and karma, named earlier, adhibhūta too is I? Brother-in-law! Looked at by this law of cause and effect, these bodies too, spoken of as adhibhūta, are I! I Myself am the Paramātma. What remains is adhidaiva. The Hiraṇyagarbha Puruṣa is He who dwells in fullness in all the cities called bodies, and so He is called Puruṣa. He who dwells in fullness in all bodies is also called Hiraṇyagarbha. As the senses are to man, so the adhidevatās are the senses of Hiraṇyagarbha.”
▸Gītā Vāhini· Prabodha 15 · Passage 11
In plain words
“And then the adhiyajña, that too is I. Whatever enjoyer there is who enjoys the fruits of all karma in all bodies, He is the adhiyajña. The enjoyer who, in all the senses, enjoys sound, touch, form, taste and smell, which are called their respective powers, is Himself the doer; He is the doer who dwells in the bodies as the indweller of all. That doer, and that enjoyer too, am I!”
