In plain words

Because I did not truly know your greatness, and so I wronged you — therefore —

I thought of you as just a friend, someone my own age — that was the mistaken idea behind those careless words I once forced out: 'Hey, Kṛṣṇa,' 'Hey, Yādava,' 'Hey, friend' — spoken by someone who simply didn't know, who was ignorant, who was blind to the truth. Didn't know what? Śaṅkara answers: didn't know your greatness — the greatness of this very Lord standing before me in this universal form. He adds a small grammatical note: read one way, 'not knowing your greatness' relates the words loosely; read another way, it is a simple, direct statement — either way the point stands. Whatever I said, I said out of carelessness, a mind that wasn't paying attention, or maybe simply out of love — the easy trust that closeness breeds. Whichever it was, that is why I spoke as I did.

Close to the Sanskrit

Since I, from not knowing your greatness, have offended, therefore —

Having thought 'friend, one of equal age,' having known [me thus] with a mistaken understanding, whatever was said forcibly, presumptuously — 'O Kṛṣṇa, O Yādava, O friend' and so on — by one not knowing, ignorant, deluded; not knowing what? He states — the greatness, the majesty, of this, your Lordly universal form. 'Not knowing this greatness of yours' — the construction is by [words in] different cases. If the reading 'tavemam' is what stands, then it is simply agreement of case. By me, out of negligence, by reason of a distracted mind, or out of affection — affection means trust caused by love — by that reason too, whatever I have said [I confess].
