In plain words

Now the demonic endowment is described —

'Hypocrisy' means flying the flag of righteousness while having none of it inside. 'Arrogance' means the swelling pride that comes from one's learning, wealth, or family. 'Excessive self-regard' was already explained, and so was 'anger.' 'Harshness' means precisely cruel speech, the kind that calls a one-eyed man 'sharp-sighted,' an ugly man 'handsome,' a person of humble birth 'nobly born,' and so on. And 'ignorance' means the false certainty about right and wrong action, born of a failure to truly discern. These belong to one born with this nature, Arjuna. Born to what, you ask? He answers: to a demonic endowment. The endowment that belongs to demons is called demonic, and these qualities belong to one born into that, that is the meaning.

Close to the Sanskrit

Now, at this point, the demonic endowment is spoken of —

'Dambha' means the hoisting of a flag of righteousness. 'Darpa' means elation caused by learning, wealth, kinsmen, etc. 'Atimāna' is as previously stated. And 'krodha' likewise. And 'pāruṣya' means precisely harsh speech, as when one calls a one-eyed man 'sighted,' a deformed man 'handsome,' one of low birth 'of the highest birth,' etc. And 'ajñāna' means the false conviction, regarding what should and should not be done etc., born of a lack of discriminative knowledge. These belong to one born with these, O Pārtha. Born to what? — thus asked, he says — to the demonic endowment; the endowment of the demons is 'āsurī'; these belong to one born to that; that is the meaning. || 4 ||
