श्रीभगवान्

In plain words

The Blessed Lord said: Faith in embodied beings is threefold, arising from their own Svabhāva—sāttvikī, rājasī, and tāmasī. Hear of it.

Word for word

Threefold is the śraddhā of the embodied; it [is] born of [their] own nature: sāttvikī and rājasī indeed, and tāmasī; thus hear of it.

In plain words

The question is put in general terms, and a question like that does not deserve an answer given without distinctions. So the Blessed Lord said:

Faith comes in three kinds -- and this is about the very disposition you are asking about. In every embodied being, it is what we call 'innate' -- born from their own nature. What does that mean? The impressions left by dharma and the rest, formed in a previous life, surface at the moment of death, and that surfacing is what is called 'nature.' Faith born from that is what is called 'innate.' Sattvic faith comes from sattva, and turns toward worshipping gods and the like. Rajasic faith comes from rajas, and turns toward worshipping yakshas and rakshasas and the like. Tamasic faith comes from tamas, and turns toward worshipping ghosts and evil spirits and the like. So listen now, and take firmly to heart, this threefold faith as it is told to you.

Close to the Sanskrit

This question has a general subject-matter; it does not merit an answer that is undifferentiated — thus the Blessed Lord said:

Threefold, of three kinds, is faith -- concerning the disposition about which you ask -- of embodied beings, of those possessing bodies, it is 'born of one's own nature'; the impression of dharma and so on made in a previous birth, made manifest at the time of death, is called 'own-nature' -- born from that, it is 'born of own-nature.' The sattvic [faith] is produced from sattva, having as its object the worship of gods and so on; the rajasic [faith] is produced from rajas, having as its object the worship of yakshas and rakshasas and so on; the tamasic [faith] is produced from tamas, having as its object the worship of ghosts and pisachas and so on; thus, hear and grasp firmly this threefold faith now being told.
