Passage 8

Passages 1–11

In matters of spiritual life, Citta-śuddhi has the foremost place; in matters of social administration, an ordered division of functions and the disciplines attached to it are necessary. One may dislike such an arrangement and try to throw it away, but the need for ordered responsibility does not disappear. Since the welfare of all is the real concern, it is better that thoughtful scholars and responsible leaders examine the matter calmly and bring it into a sound form. If some people have misused varṇa or provoked unjust accusations around it, educated and discerning people should not merely intensify the confusion. Even the declaration “there is no varṇa” becomes, in practice, another social position; just as “there is no religion” itself becomes a kind of creed. Every thing has its proper limits, and when its nature and function are torn apart, it loses its integrity. So too a varṇa without any corresponding disposition, discipline, or boundary becomes something suspended between categories. The elders preserved these functional limits over generations for the welfare of society. They should not be judged only from an outer and individualistic viewpoint. If examined with discrimination, inward vision, and concern for the whole, whatever purity lies in the underlying principle can be brought to light—just as butter already present throughout milk becomes visible when the milk is properly churned. Another explanation compares the four varṇas to the limbs of a single body—the body of Bhagavān. The Brāhmaṇa is compared with the mouth, because speech communicates knowledge like a Guru; the Kṣatriya with the arms, because strength bears the burden of protection; the Vaiśya with the thighs, because productive capacity supports society; and the Śūdra with the feet and hands of service, because practical work carries the whole structure forward. If any organ is missing, the body is diminished; if any necessary function is absent from society, social well-being suffers. Just as every organ of the body has value, every social function has value. If hands or feet angrily refuse to work because the stomach receives nourishment, the whole body suffers. A figure made of sugar is sweet whether one tastes its head or its foot. In the same way, all arise from the one Paramātma. Their functions may differ, but life, pain, joy, and the essential human reality are shared. The same blood flows through the whole body; there is not one blood for the hand and another for the foot. This is presented as a principle of interdependence, not as a licence for hatred or contempt. Those who argue that abolishing the varṇa system alone will secure the welfare of the world may suppose that only they desire the common good, and that anyone who speaks for preserving its underlying order wishes harm. Both assumptions are mistaken. The real question is not which side can shout more loudly, but what genuinely serves society. Those who oppose the system and those who wish to preserve it should both enquire carefully, identify what is good and what is harmful, and then decide what should be sustained and what should be corrected. Argument without understanding breeds distorted meanings and hatred. That brings welfare to no one. Leaders should seek the counsel of learned and experienced people and investigate patiently. The original purpose of the fourfold division, the text insists, was the welfare of all. Confusion arose because its right use was not understood or practised. Consider even a bomb capable of killing lakhs of people. Scientists may create such a weapon with the support of governments, but that does not give anyone the freedom to use it whenever and however he pleases. Its use is placed under authority and restraint. A weapon employed for the protection of oneself or one’s country is one thing; to use the same power recklessly for destruction is another. The fault therefore lies not merely in the existence of an instrument or capacity, but in the purpose, discrimination, and discipline with which it is used. Thus the varṇas are compared to instruments of protection: each has its duty, and each must be used within proper limits. Disorder arises when boundaries and responsibilities are ignored and people use an institution as they please. Were the elders, kings, scholars, and men of experience who upheld such arrangements all without intelligence or learning? Were they innocent fools who understood nothing? No, no. Among people today, perhaps one in a crore may equal the keenness of their intelligence, their power of enquiry, or their grounding in Ātma-vidyā. Many of them lived simply, sustaining themselves even on roots and tubers, labouring greatly and pouring their strength into Loka-kṣema. Today people may speak constantly of the welfare of the world while their conduct moves in the opposite direction. New fashions of thought are erected like castles in the air: while one side is being built up, another side is already collapsing. Therefore a structure should be judged by its purpose, discipline, and fruits, not merely dismissed because it is old or praised because it is new. Just as the body is vital to an embodied being, the whole land is one body for a nation. Harm to any part concerns the whole. If the country is one body, would the Divine wish one of its limbs destroyed? Before God all are equal, and all have the right to seek God. Yet, as each bodily organ performs the function appropriate to it, each social function must carry its responsibility for the welfare of the whole. If everyone were engaged only in trade, who would buy and who would fulfil the other needs of society? If everyone were a warrior, who would provide food and the other necessities of life? The better way, the text says, is for people to perform their allotted work while understanding all work as service to the protection and welfare of the country. Rather than fighting among ourselves over varṇa, we should seek the welfare of the whole. Paramātma shows no partiality in this arrangement; partiality is not in His nature. Some imagine that God Himself creates divisions, but there is no such division in Him. God is cool and sweet like a lump of sugar. Divisions, wounds, and feelings of separateness arise in beings caught in anātma-bhāva, not in God. Think of a mother with four children. All were born from the same womb, yet she does not care for an infant in the cradle in exactly the same way as for the older children. She gives each the food and care suited to age and capacity. This does not mean that her love is divided or that she loves only the youngest. In the same way, though the whole world is His and all are His children, God assigns responsibilities in keeping with differing capacities and circumstances. To accuse the impartial, stainless, ever-blissful One of prejudice is like searching for darkness in the sun. Where the sun’s rays fall, darkness flees; how could darkness abide in the sun itself? From the spiritual standpoint, the four varṇas can be understood in yet another way. One established in Brahman is the true Brāhmaṇa. One who destroys the hold of the impermanent is the true Kṣatriya. One endowed with a purposeful, truth-directed intelligence that cultivates right living is the true Vaiśya. One who faithfully carries out disciplined action in truth is the true Śūdra. These four modes of disciplined life, the text says, are necessary for the flowering of full humanity. Returning to the Gītā, Kṛṣṇa tells Arjuna: “Bāvā! The four varṇas were brought forth by Me according to the divisions of guṇa and karma. Though I am their source, know Me, in truth, as the non-doer. Conscious Ātma is never bound by action; Ātma is by nature asaṅga, unattached. I have no egoistic feeling ‘I am doing this,’ no ahaṅkāra or mamakāra; therefore the vast activity of creation, sustenance, and dissolution does not bind Me. Egoistic identification and possessiveness belong to ignorance, and it is they that bind a person to karma. From the standpoint of worldly appearance I seem to act, but in truth I am Akartā, the non-doer. Listen carefully: karma itself has no power to bind. The bondage comes from the feeling ‘I am the doer’ and from craving for the fruit. Just as a zero acquires numerical value only when joined to a digit, actions become binding through the digit of kartṛtva, doership. Renounce that identification and action cannot injure you. Actions performed without desire for fruit do not harden into vāsanās; where there are no binding vāsanās, there is no compulsory rebirth. The mumukṣus of old acted with this understanding. They did not think ‘I am the doer’ or ‘I am the enjoyer’; they knew Bhagavān alone as the true Karta and regarded their own activity merely as an instrument of His work.” “Bāvā! Act with that same understanding. Then Citta-śuddhi will surely arise in you. Listen further, and I shall explain what karma and akarma truly mean within action itself.” “Many are bewildered by karma and akarma because their truth is subtle. Svadharma expressed in action is called karma; action illumined by Ātma-jñāna is spoken of in another sense as vikarma. Whatever the outward action, if it is performed in ignorance it brings strain and bondage, not peace. To see akarma in karma and karma in akarma is the mark of discriminating wisdom. People speak of three—karma, vikarma, and akarma—but vikarma is treated within the field of karma and is not always separately named. In a practical sense, karma is what ought to be done, vikarma what ought not to be done, and akarma is non-action. Yet its deeper meaning is the state of Ātma, which is actionless even while body, senses, prāṇa, buddhi, and manas carry on their respective activities.” Thus Bhagavān clarified karma and akarma. Passengers in a bus, train, or boat may see stationary trees and hills appear to move while they themselves seem still. The motion of the vehicle is superimposed upon the landscape. In the same way, the activities of body and senses are superimposed upon Ātma, which is in truth changeless and free of saṁsāra. To realise directly that Ātma is Akartā—the non-doer—is true akarma. Merely abandoning outward work does not make one a non-doer. No embodied person can remain forever without outward activity; such a notion is not practicable.
