But our varṇas in Bhārata are decided by birth; for foreigners they are decided by karma. That is the difference between the two. Now, among the brāhmaṇas, who are set in the first place, there are indeed those who have lost their way and set out on a base path. And among those called śūdras, in the fourth place, there are indeed those in whom sacred feelings have grown and who strive for citta-śuddhi. For this much alone, to say that varṇa is of no use is not acceptable.
