Passage 21

Passages 1–24

The whole world is ādhēya, that which is supported; Paramātma is the Ādhāra, the Support. Yet people usually think only of what is supported and scarcely of the support itself. Can anything supported exist without a support? This too is a defect of vision. When the defect in vision is corrected, the Creator behind creation becomes apparent. Arjuna once asked Kṛṣṇa about this very matter: “What exactly is this defect of vision? Explain it clearly, and tell me its cause.” Arjuna was no ordinary listener. He did not nod at everything without discrimination. Whenever a doubt arose he courageously questioned Bhagavān Himself, and would not rest until the answer was grounded both in śāstra and experience. Paramātma answered with a smile: “Bābā! Listen. Between this world and Me moves the bewildering power called Māyā. Human beings find it difficult to overcome. Māyā too is Mine; it is not something separate from Me. It lies within My vision and under My command. In a moment it can turn a person’s understanding upside down. You may wonder whether it can really be so difficult to conquer. It is. You may master even the wind more readily than Māyā. Only those who take complete refuge in Me cross beyond it.” “Māyā is not some newly created substance that came into existence later. Its nature is to forget the eternal Paramātma and take the products of guṇa—the objects of name and form—as absolutely real. To mistake oneself, who is Ātma, for the body is Māyā. It is not something that truly exists first and later disappears, nor something once absent that later arises. In truth it is never independently real, yet it appears—like water in a mirage. One who knows the truth is not drawn by it; one who does not know runs after the appearance, becomes exhausted, restless, and discouraged. Darkness arising in a house seems to cover the house; scum forms upon water and covers the water; a cataract arises in the eye and veils the eye. Māyā too is subtle: arising in dependence upon a being, it veils that very being’s vision, and appears to cover even the field of the three guṇas and the Trimūrti.” “Those caught in jīva-bhrānti become subject to Māyā; those established in Tattva stand beyond it. Māyā prevents Tattva from being seen, but it cannot bind a true knower of Tattva. You might ask: if Māyā arises in dependence upon Me, why does it not veil Me too? Such a conclusion does not follow. Māyā is an upādāna-cause within the manifested field, not a cause superior to Sarveśvara. I am Māyā’s Lord; the world is what stands under its veil. Māyā depends on Me and obeys My command. Those who depend wholly on Me and stand within My command find Māyā itself bowing before them as a servant.” “One crosses Māyā through knowledge of Paramātma; no merely external route can carry one beyond it. Māyā is the superimposition of the dharmas of what is not Ātma upon Ātma: pleasure and pain are dharmas of Manas; birth and death belong to the body; hunger and thirst belong to prāṇa. These are anātma-dharmas, not Ātma-dharmas. To place them upon Ātma is Māyā. But Māyā cannot remain before one who has truly taken refuge in Me. To one whose gaze remains fixed on Māyā, it seems like an immeasurable ocean; to one whose gaze turns toward Paramātma, even Māyā reveals Mādhava. The obstacle is crossed either through Bhagavad-aikya-bhāva, the path of Jñāna, or through Śaraṇāgati, the path of Bhakti.” Ordinary people do not readily feel the impulse to take refuge in Bhagavān and cross Māyā. Their disposition reflects saṁskāras carried from prior merit and demerit. Those dominated by duṣkṛta chase only enjoyment and momentary pleasure, living like creatures absorbed in eating, wandering, and temporary delight. Taking this alone as the purpose of life, they have little thought of God, may even dislike satsanga and right conduct, and drift away from the higher path. Those shaped by sukṛta, by contrast, spend their lives in good qualities, good thought, and remembrance of Sarveśvara, longing for Bhagavān. They may begin as ārtas, arthārthīs, or jijñāsus; accumulated puṇya and saṁskāra have helped form such tendencies. Yet the Gītā does not present sakāma-karma as the faultless ideal. It points instead to Niṣkāma Karma. Some may then ask: “Did Arjuna not still have desires? How can the Gītā call him a devotee?” In this world it is difficult to find anyone utterly without some desire. People ordinarily seek another person or power to fulfil what they want. Desire itself is one limitation; forgetting Bhagavān and depending only on another limited human being becomes a second. The bhakta, however, turns even his unpurified desire toward the Bhagavān in whom he has faith. Thus, even if desire remains a defect, seeking Sarveśvara rather than making a finite being one’s ultimate refuge removes the second error. One fault is less than two. At this stage, therefore, it is illuminating to ask not only “What does this person want?” but “To whom does he turn?” Even with sakāma-buddhi, one who turns toward Sarveśvara rather than toward limited supports has taken a higher step and may rightly be called a bhakta. Among the four devotees—ārta, arthārthī, jijñāsu, and jñānī—the first three conceive Bhagavān somewhat indirectly and pray to Him as other than themselves. The jñānī knows Him aparokṣa, directly, as one’s own Ātma, and remains established in Bhagavān. The first three still use approach to God partly as a means to obtain their respective aims. The jñānī has eka-bhakti, single devotion. The others have a devotion distributed among many concerns, for their love still flows toward desired objects, experiences, beings, and God together. The jñānī does not look toward anything as separate from Bhagavān; if he looks, he sees Bhagavān there too. That is why Paramātma says the jñānī is especially dear to Him. God is equal toward all, yet nearness produces a special intimacy of experience; therefore the jñānī is said to dwell closest to Bhagavān. Fire naturally removes cold, but if a person refuses to come near the fire, how will the cold be relieved? The failure to feel warmth does not prove that fire lacks power. In the same way, one who longs for the grace that removes inner suffering must draw near to Paramātma through Jñāna and Sādhana. Nearness opens one to what has always been available. It is meaningless to blame Sarveśvara for deficiencies in our own effort and then declare that God discriminates between sinner and virtuous, jñānī and ajñānī. Bhagavān has no such partiality. If He truly rejected those considered sinners, they could not live even for a moment. It is because His sustaining presence is impartial that all live. The jñānī knows this; others imagine that God is somewhere far away and suffer under that delusion. The jñānī is beyond Māyā and no longer governed by the guṇas. The jijñāsu, though not yet there, gives little room to lesser expectations and spends time in Bhagavad-cintana, good conduct, and noble thought. The arthārthī and ārta too can gradually enquire more deeply, grow through Sādhana and faith, become jijñāsus, and through that ripen into Jñāna. Thus each stage can become a step toward the next. The stages are like ways of travelling toward one destination. One does not usually leap to the end in a single movement. Jñāna may be compared with a “through train”: once established in it, the traveller need not get down at intermediate stations before the destination. The jijñāsu is like a through-carriage attached from one train to another: the traveller remains in the same carriage though the outer vehicle changes. The ārta and arthārthī are like ordinary trains that do not go all the way; the traveller must alight, wait, and board again. This involves more effort and delay, but in the end all four can reach the one destination. That is why Bhagavān repeatedly says all four are His. Their goal is one, though their route and time differ. Kṛṣṇa calls those who seek only small objects kṛpaṇas, while those who seek Bhagavān are udāras, large-hearted. The jñānī’s Bhakti is sahaja-bhakti, natural devotion; the others possess gauṇa-bhakti, devotion that still depends upon secondary aims. The jñānī knows one’s own Ātma as Paramātma. Bhakti is anurakti, loving attachment to the worshipful. Such Jñāna is the ripened power of Sādhana across many lives; it is not a commodity suddenly purchased from a shop or market. Just as becoming a skilled physician requires long preparation, one cannot place an untrained person in a hospital and expect healing rather than harm. So too, if one appears today as a mahā-jñānī, much Sādhana and deep saṁskāra must have ripened into that state. Yet today people readily announce themselves as jñānīs. There must be a true sign. “Vāsudevaḥ sarvam—Vāsudeva is all” as lived experience is that sign. Vāsudeva should not be understood merely as “the son of Vasudeva”; the name points to the One in whom all beings dwell and who dwells in all beings. Such a state alone makes one a Jñānī. Merely writing the title “Jñānī” after one’s own name makes one a Jñānī in name and an ajñānī in experience. The greatness of the Jñānī is to know That, after knowing which nothing further remains to be known. Memorising a few ślokas, thumping through some books, collecting a few fine sayings from elders, climbing a stage before ten people and pouring out one’s learning, or gathering a circle of disciples does not make a Jñānī. In this Kali age many such figures appear: ochre in their robes, but a butcher’s hardness in the heart. Can such a heart be made to shine like a demon’s own blood? But that would not truly be a demon’s blood—what price would even a demon set on blood, when no one has ever seen a demon to ask? If a demon really named such a price, whoever paid it would be the greatest fool of all; the truth is that no one, on any day, has ever seen either a demon or such blood. It was precisely because shallow claims to Jñāna would arise that Kṛṣṇa gave the mahā-mantra-like teaching “Vāsudevaḥ sarvam.” That one realisation is enough to carry a human being across. To remember and contemplate it continuously is itself sacred. Titles such as “Mahātma,” “Jagadguru,” “Bhagavān,” “Jñānī,” “Paramahaṁsa,” “Tyāgī,” or “Ānanda” are meaningless when merely self-assumed. Names worn for display last only a few days; they are neither authentic nor pure. One may look like a sannyāsī outside while carrying greed within; display Yoga outwardly while harbouring diseases of desire; bear a name ending in “Ānanda” while wandering restlessly through worldly entanglements; speak honeyed words while acting cruelly. A sincere householder absorbed in honest daily duty may be spiritually healthier than such counterfeit renunciation. The text says such misconduct especially weakens the ethical and spiritual culture of Bhārata, because it can cause people to lose faith even in Bhagavān. To preach Tyāga while craving bhoga, to speak morality while practising hatred and jealousy—these contradictions are enemies of Sannyāsa and roads to downfall. Where word and action do not agree, there is no Satya. Among householders too there are many truthful, Sāttvic, well-conducted, and hatred-free hearts. Jealousy, Ahaṅkāra, and display can destroy any sādhaka. Therefore seekers and bhaktas should relinquish what must be relinquished, live in right conduct, remain in contemplation of Sarveśvara, realise the Ananda of experience, and share that light with the world. Then loka-śānti and loka-kalyāṇa become possible. Kṛṣṇa gives special attention to such pure jñānīs, for through Jñāna the world itself becomes luminous; a person without Jñāna is like a house without a lamp.
