Passage 20

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Next, the second, “Cit”: this is the power that seeks to know everything. Whatever a man sees, he asks, “What is this? What is that?” and wishes to know its state and course. There may be some who, by trying in that way, come to know it. Others may merely wish to know and try, and yet fail to know. Be that as it may, everyone does show eagerness and effort to know. If someone takes a small boy by the hand and goes to a market, or a bazaar, or an exhibition, the boy, seeing every thing there, does not stay quiet. He keeps asking his elders, or whoever took him there by the hand, “What is this? What is that?” Even though the boy has no need, even though he does not understand when told, he does not stop asking. This is ordinarily seen in everyone's daily experience. What is the inner meaning in this? If one thinks it over: the ‘Cit-śakti’ that is in that form cannot stay quiet. Staying quiet is not natural to it. It longs to know every single thing. It comes out in this form.
