But Kṛṣṇa did not wish to lose time, and being the Paramātma who knows the heart, He began at once to clear Arjuna's doubt. “Brother-in-law! Why be flustered! Is your doubt that I declared the unstable body to be Me? To ordinary people it would seem just as you have taken it. But this is not something everyone understands so easily. There is a relation between this unstable, perishable body and Me. It is I who am its support; without Me this body does not exist. If you inquire into its origin and history, it will all become clear to you; the secret will be laid bare. Listen! In the ordinary course, the root cause of the gross body is the food, that is, the anna, eaten by the parents of that body. Where did that anna come from? From the earth. That is to say, this anna existed before in the form of earth; from it, taking on the form of grain, it became anna. If one inquires what the support of this earth is, it was in the form of water. If one goes on inquiring in just this way, fire is the support of water; water existed before in the form of fire. Where did fire come from? What is its support? If one examines this, it becomes plain that fire came from air, and that fire existed before in the form of air. What is the earlier form of air? If one examines this, one learns that ākāśa is its support. What form did ākāśa have before? Where did ākāśa come from? If one carries out that inquiry, it becomes clear that ‘Māyā’ has been its support and its form. That Māyā is My very upādhi! Do you see!”
