“Earth has all five: sound, touch, form, taste and smell. That is why earth is so heavy. Water, the second, has only four: sound, touch, form and taste. In it one, smell, is missing. Because of that it is somewhat lighter, and it flows. Then in fire, the third, there are only sound, touch and form; taste and smell are not there. For that reason fire is subtler still, and rises upward. Air is the fourth; in it only sound and touch remain, and since form, taste and smell are not there, it has become subtler still and all-pervading. Next is ākāśa; in it only sound remains. Since the rest, touch, form, taste and smell, are not there, ākāśa has become the lightest of all.”
