Passage 18
Passages 1–21
ఈ రెండింటి వలననే మరణ సమయమున మాధవ చింతన మనస్సున చేరును. దీనికిని మనస్సే ప్రధానము. మనస్సు చెడినా, మనిషి చెడును. మనస్సు స్థితిని బట్టి మనిషి గతి ఏర్పడును. కాని మనస్సును సంస్కరింప జేయుట కొరకు, మంచి అభ్యాసములు కావలెను. అందు నిమిత్తమై కృష్ణపరమాత్మ, భగవంతుని యెట్టి భావముతో స్మరించవలెనో, భగవంతుని స్వరూపమెట్టిదో వర్ణించుటకు మొదలు పెట్టెను;
1For an ordinary person, it is not easy for the thought of Mādhava to arise at the moment of death. Earlier saṁskāras must support it. Manas must be trained through abhyāsa; even that by itself is not enough. Other thoughts must not be allowed to enter, and ananya-bhāva—single-hearted absorption in Him—must be cultivated. 2Through these two, the remembrance of Mādhava can arise in Manas at the final moment. Manas is central: when the mind goes astray, the person goes astray; one’s course follows the state of one’s mind. To refine Manas, good habits of practice are therefore essential. Kṛṣṇa Paramātma now begins to describe the attitude in which Bhagavān should be remembered and the nature of His Svarūpa. 3“Bāvā, Arjuna! People describe Me in three ways: first as Nirguṇa-Nirākāra, without qualities and without form; second as Saguṇa-Nirākāra, with qualities but without form; and third as Saguṇa-Sākāra, with qualities and with form. I shall first explain the Saguṇa-Nirākāra form.” 4“Listen to how Bhagavān is to be remembered in this mode: as Kavi, Purāṇa, Anuśāsitā, subtler than the subtlest, Sarvādhāra, Acintya-rūpa, Āditya-varṇa, and beyond Tamas.” Arjuna asked, “Swāmi, there are poets among ordinary people too. Can that common meaning of ‘Kavi’ apply to Paramātma, or does the word have a special significance here? Please explain.” 5Kṛṣṇa replied, “Arjuna, Kavi does not merely mean one who composes poetry. Here Kavi means Sarvajña—the All-knowing, the knower of the three times. Nothing lies outside His vision. Bhagavān is the imperishable Kavi, and His poetry is an immortal kāvya.” Arjuna then asked about Purāṇa. Kṛṣṇa said, “However ancient He is, He is ever new. He is Sanātana and forever fresh; therefore He is ‘older than the oldest and yet ever new.’” 6“And what is Anuśāsitā? He is Sarvatantra-Svatantra, utterly sovereign, the One who governs all. Even the Pañca-bhūtas are bound by His command and cannot cross the limits He has ordained. Human laws regulate outward conduct; Paramātma’s law reaches inward and governs the very mind. Know Him therefore as the completely independent Lord.” 7Arjuna asked, “Swāmi, what of the fourth description—the subtle form? What does ‘subtle’ really mean?” 8“Pārtha, do not imagine that ‘subtle’ simply means very small. Here it means Nirguṇa, beyond the grasp of the senses. As the number of perceptible qualities decreases, an element is said to become subtler. Consider the Pañca-bhūtas: earth, water, fire, air, and space, together with their respective qualities of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell. Each is subtler than the one before it.” 9“Earth possesses all five qualities—sound, touch, form, taste, and smell—and is therefore the grossest. Water has four, lacking smell, and is subtler and able to flow. Fire has sound, touch, and form, but not taste or smell, and is subtler still. Air has only sound and touch and is subtler and more pervasive.” 10“Bhagavān is beyond even these subtle elements. Since no limiting guṇas belong to Him, He is Sūkṣmāti-sūkṣma, subtler than the subtlest and more pervasive than all. Guṇas give weight and limitation; Bhagavān is Guṇātīta, beyond them.” 11The fifth description is Sarvādhāra, the Support of all. In the world there is ādhāra, the support, and ādhēya, that which depends upon it. Everything that can be seen or heard—all creation constituted of earth, water, fire, air, and space—is ādhēya. All of it rests upon Bhagavān. He alone supports all, while He Himself depends upon nothing else. Hence He is Sarvādhāra. 12“Now hear the sixth: Acintya-rūpa, the One who cannot be circumscribed by thought. It is Manas that thinks, but Manas is fleeting and jaḍa, while Paramātma is eternal Caitanya. The transient cannot contain the Eternal; the inert cannot comprehend Consciousness. You may ask, ‘Then what is a sādhaka to do?’ Contemplate Him precisely as Acintya—beyond the mind. When contemplation is undertaken in the right way, its fruit comes in the right way. First the sādhaka must learn how to contemplate.” Hearing this, Arjuna said, “Swāmi, let us move forward; the battle is upon us. I am ready to act as You command. Please tell me the seventh description.” 13“Arjuna, Āditya-varṇa means that Bhagavān is self-luminous like the sun. Indeed, even the sun’s radiance belongs to Paramātma. The sun illumines the world, but Bhagavān illumines even the sun; therefore He is called Āditya-varṇa.” 14“Now the eighth: He is beyond Tamas. Tamas here means ajñāna, and ‘beyond’ means the Witness of it. Māyā and ajñāna are closely related, and Paramātma is beyond Māyā. Close your eyes: you see darkness. How do you know that darkness is there? Darkness is one thing and the knowing of it another. If you were the darkness itself, you could not witness it. In the same way a person says, ‘I am ignorant; I do not know.’ If he were nothing but ignorance, from where would the knowledge of that ignorance arise? Ajñāna is the seen; Jñāna is the seeing light. You are the Sākṣin who knows ignorance, not ignorance itself. To contemplate these eight descriptions in this way is true Svarūpa-cintana.” Arjuna then asked whether such contemplation alone was sufficient or whether something more was needed. 15“Pārtha, while contemplating in this way, Manas must be centred on one object alone and not allowed to roam among many. There must also be Prīti and Bhakti toward that chosen object. Human love is usually scattered over unstable things and so becomes a source of sorrow. Blessed is the one who turns that love away from transient objects and toward Bhagavān. Bhakti is when the Citta-vṛtti takes the very form of the object of meditation.” When Arjuna asked how this could be done, Kṛṣṇa replied: “Restrain all the gateways of the senses, hold Manas in the heart, establish Prāṇa at the crown, practise yogic dhāraṇā connected with Ātma, and at the final departure leave the body with Brahman—Om—in remembrance. Such a one reaches Me; the Citta-vṛtti becomes one with its object.” 16The distinction in Kṛṣṇa’s words is important. He says the senses are to be brought under saṁyama, not rendered completely inactive through mere nigraha. Saṁyama means mastery; nigraha, in this context, suggests shutting an instrument down altogether. Every sense has been given for a proper function. It should be used when needed, within its rightful limit, not allowed to wander simply because it has the power to do so. The teaching is disciplined use, not mutilation of the faculties. 17One should therefore consider what truly opens the heart and brings inner joy, and lead the senses along a straight and wholesome path. When they are allowed to run crookedly, Manas wanders like an unruly monkey. Much of the unrest people suffer arises because the senses are not used in the right way. We must know what is allowed to enter through each doorway. Prevention is better than regret after disturbance has entered the house; and if one has once gone astray, at least one should take care not to repeat the error. 18Arjuna then wondered: if the senses are held under control, how can Om be uttered? Kṛṣṇa understood and said, “Bāvā, the utterance of Om is to take place in Manas, not merely through speech.” Another doubt arose: “Kṛṣṇa, You have said that japa removes pāpa. But if japa only removes sin, how does it bring Paramātma-prāpti?” Kṛṣṇa was pleased with the question. “Pārtha, these need not be separate acts. While mentally repeating Om, hold the bhāva of Paramātma, who is the meaning of Om; then Paramātma-prāpti too follows.” Arjuna protested that doing both together sounded difficult in practice. 19“Pārtha, that is why I spoke of Abhyāsa-yoga. Through long practice Manas learns to perform both together with ease. Even animals acquire remarkable capacities through training. Look at the horses of your chariot and the elephants on the battlefield: they did not learn the arts of war in the forest as an inborn instinct. Their capacity has come through disciplined practice.” 20“In the same way, if Manas is repeatedly withdrawn from the senses and trained over a long period, these powers become natural to it. One who departs remembering Paramātma with Om surely reaches Bhagavān.” Arjuna then asked, “Swāmi, what of the many who cannot remember sacred Praṇava at the final moment? Is there no liberation for them? Are Bhagavān’s doors open only to those already near Him? Where is the place for the weak and distant?” 21“Arjuna, you are mistaken. Bhagavān makes no division between weak and strong, great and small. All are eligible for His Anugraha. The doors of His court are always open; there are no guards barring the way. Whoever enters is welcomed, but how can anyone compel one who refuses even to approach the door? If you want the warmth of fire, you must come near it. From far away you may see its light but not feel its heat; that does not mean the fire has no warmth. So too, all who long for Bhagavān’s nearness, His experience, and His Prema, and who remember Him constantly, have a place with Him. Not everyone can mentally intone Praṇava at the last moment. Therefore, if one remembers Him continually with a pure Citta, I Myself shall care for that person’s Yoga-kṣema. This too requires Abhyāsa. Everything is ripened through Sādhana and practice; Ananya-cintana is the support by which one reaches Me.”
