Passage 19

Passages 1–33

“Whoever, with ananya-citta and constant inward union, remembers Me unceasingly and whose prāṇa departs through the upward gate rather than another gate, surely reaches Me. Such a one has a place in Me. As near as he is to Me, so near am I to him. Could I forget one who does not forget Me? Bāvā, forgetfulness belongs to human limitation, not to the Divine.” “I do not demand Yoga, Tapas, or even Jñāna. Whether one lacks the power for such disciplines or has the power but cannot undertake them, what I ask is simply this: place your Citta upon Me and offer it to Me.” “If even that cannot be offered to Bhagavān, what kind of Sādhana is it? A person who claims to have no strength to remember Me with ananya-citta somehow finds strength for display, prestige, honours, position, and reputation. Is there strength for everything except offering oneself to Bhagavān?” “Because human beings are drawn outward, they surrender Manas easily to sense-filled objects. But when asked to turn it toward Viśveśvara, they behave as though a mountain has fallen upon them. They want God-remembrance to be as effortless as buying greens in the market: little longing, much Tamas, yet the expectation of the highest attainment.” “If the longing is genuine, a sādhaka does not allow weariness or disappointment to overcome him, however many difficulties arise. With ananya-citta he remembers always. To such a one Bhagavān is no longer ‘other’; He reveals the state ‘He is I and I am He’—the continuous anusandhāna of Aham Brahmāsmi. This is called Ananya-bhāva.” Arjuna asked, “Swāmi, You say Ananya-bhakti is simple and demands no other great hardship, and that to such a devotee You too are easily attained. What then is the fruit of attaining You?” Kṛṣṇa smiled. “Bāvā, it has little meaning to ask what fruit comes from Bhagavat-prāpti. What greater fruit could there be? Through that sacred attainment an ordinary person becomes a Mahātma. You may then ask what distinguishes a Mahātma. The ordinary person is bound to jīva-bhāva and deha-bhāva and is tossed by sukha and duḥkha, unrest and temporary peace. The Mahātma is different: deha-bhāva and jīva-bhāva have fallen away, and Brahma-bhāva alone remains.” In such a Mahātma, the Antaḥkaraṇa is free of the stains of Rajas and Tamas; this purity is what the name Mahātma properly signifies. Today the title may be used while inner impurities remain hardened within. But one whose Antaḥkaraṇa is truly pure is freed from repeated birth and death. However many meritorious acts one performs or however high a world one reaches, without that purity return remains. Only those established continuously in Brahma-bhāva reach the Timeless and become one with That, beyond rebirth. Arjuna asked, “Swāmi, the Upaniṣads say that one who reaches Brahmaloka does not return. For whom exactly is there no return? Please explain.” “Bāvā, the Upaniṣads speak of two kinds of Mukti: Sadyo-mukti and Krama-mukti. Sadyo-mukti is also called Kaivalya-mukti. Such a one need not travel to any other loka; Bhagavat-prāpti is realised here and now. That state is eternal. Other attainments are temporary: one remains in heavenly worlds only as long as the fruit of puṇya endures and then must return. True Laya belongs to Kaivalya.” “Kṛṣṇa, what is the difference between Laya and destruction? Are they not the same?” “Pārtha, Laya is not destruction. It is a state in which a thing is no longer separately visible.” “Swāmi, if it is no longer visible, what is that except destruction?” “Bāvā, invisibility alone is not destruction. Put salt or sugar into water: it disappears from sight, yet its taste remains. Has it been destroyed, or has it merged? Laya means that the separate form is no longer seen while its reality is not annihilated. Like salt dissolved in water, the jīva entering Brahman is spoken of as Laya; it is not destroyed. Those who have not attained Kaivalya but have accumulated puṇya through Karma reach higher worlds, return, and continue Sādhana until they ripen into the truth.” Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, if even Brahmaloka does not by itself end rebirth, what is the path beyond return? Is there no other way?” “Pārtha, beyond all such transient worlds there is a distinct eternal state. Human beings wander through many routes because they do not know it and cannot distinguish the straight way from the crooked.” “Four broad paths are found among people: first, the state beyond Karma; second, Niṣkāma-karma; third, Kāmya-karma; and fourth, the way of those fallen from Dharma and Karma.” “The first are Karmātītas—Jīvanmuktas. All their Karma has been burnt in the fire of Jñāna. For them the ordinary injunctions of ‘must do’ and ‘must not do’ no longer bind.” They have no separate necessity for Sādhana, charity, ritual duty, or Tapas as means to an end. Whatever they do has become Bhagavat-karma. Wherever they stand is Kaivalya; each word becomes Brahma-vākya. When such a one leaves the body, Prāṇa need not travel elsewhere; Brahman is realised there itself. This is the Kaivalya-prāpti, Brahma-prāpti, and Sadyo-mukti already described. “The second are practitioners of Niṣkāma-karma-yoga, called Mumukṣus—those whose longing is for Mokṣa. They perform all actions in the spirit of Bhagavat-prāpti and seek no separate fruits. They choose sat-karma and do not hanker after worldly enjoyments or heavenly rewards. Mokṣa alone is their aim, and according to the steadiness of their dīkṣā they receive Bhagavān’s grace.” “The third are Sakāma-karma-yogins. They perform good and śāstra-sanctioned actions, but with expectation of fruit. They avoid prohibited and sinful actions, yet undertake puṇya-karma for desired pleasures, prosperity, or heavenly enjoyments. After death they reach the corresponding higher worlds, remain while their accumulated puṇya lasts, and then return to Bhūloka.” “The fourth are Karma-bhraṣṭas. They recognise neither puṇya nor pāpa, good nor evil, discipline nor Śāstra, Dharma nor God. Their aim is temporary pleasure and bodily ease. The text compares their movement from body to body to a creeping insect that secures its next support before releasing the previous one. For them the round of birth and death continues until a purifying time and tendency arise. Even the manner and inner condition of death therefore matter. Hence it is said that death itself bears witness to the life of a good person.” Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, tell me: at what time does one leave the body and not return, and at what time does one depart and take birth again?” Kṛṣṇa replied, “Pārtha, this is a necessary question. At times your discernment delights Me; at other times your attachment and possessiveness throw the horses of ignorance before it. Let us now return to the point.” “Hear the answer. Niṣkāma-karma-yogins and upāsakas travel by the path symbolised by Agni, light, day, Śukla-pakṣa, and the six months of Uttarāyaṇa, and attain Brahman. Agni is the first station; this is called Devayāna, and in the Veda the path is also known as Arcirādi-mārga. They begin in light, travel through light, and arrive in Light; they do not return to birth.” “Sakāma-karma-yogins, by contrast, are described as travelling through smoke, night, Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa, and the six months of Dakṣiṇāyana—the Dhūmādi-mārga. They reach Svarga, enjoy the fruit of puṇya, and return when that merit is exhausted. Both are forms of yogic journey. These two paths are spoken of from ancient times and endure as long as upāsakas and karmādhikārins remain in the world.” Here a natural question arises. How are we to understand the favour of the deities of Śukla-pakṣa and Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa? What of one who dies at some time not neatly falling into such divisions? What world or state is his? This doubt is reasonable and deserves examination. Śukla-pakṣa is the fortnight in which the moon’s light increases day by day. What has that to do with death? The moon is closely linked in traditional symbolism with Manas: ‘candramā manaso jātaḥ…’. The inner meaning is that, just as lunar brightness waxes, sacred and divine bhāvas in Manas should grow day by day until, at life’s end, they reach fullness. Such an inwardly luminous time may be understood as the grace of Śukla-pakṣa. Outwardly the calendar time may be anything; inwardly, this ripened luminosity is the sacred time. For the body there is the visible light of sun and moon; for Manas the true light is the blossoming of divine awareness. The sādhaka should understand both the outer symbol and its inward meaning. The same enquiry applies to Uttarāyaṇa. Worship and Sādhana undertaken with understanding purify the heart and dispel doubt and inertia. In the outer sense, Uttarāyaṇa is pictured as a clear sky free of obscuring cloud and smoke, with the sun shining openly. This is the bodily or cosmological symbol of time. Its subtler meaning is inward. The human heart is the inner sky. When clouds of ajñāna, abhimāna, and mamakāra no longer obscure it, Buddhi shines there like the sun of Jñāna. When such Śuddha-buddhi stands clear and steady in a pure heart, that itself is Uttarāyaṇa, whatever the external date may be. Jñāna itself is the Sun; purified Buddhi is Jñāna-bhāskara. One who departs established in this luminous state does not return to birth. This too is called the Arcirādi path, and such souls reach Brahman. Dakṣiṇāyana is described as the opposite image: a sky covered by dense cloud and smoke so that the sun is obscured. Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa is the waning of the moon day by day. In the inward sense it is the gradual waning of divine bhāva in Manas until, at the final moment, the heart-sky is dark like the new-moon night—covered by smoke and ignorance. This is called Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa. One who leaves the body in such an inward condition follows the path of smoke, here described as leading to a lower state rather than liberation.
