Passages 1–14

Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, You said that one who no longer sees the visible world merely as ‘world’ but knows it as Paramātma is a true Vedavit, and that the effect is not separate from its cause. How is this possible? The visible world grows and decays, while Paramātma is eternal, true, stainless, and unmoving. How can fire and water be one? Explain the basis of this unity so that I may understand.” Kṛṣṇa replied, “Bāvā, every appearance in the world has what is called svabhāva, a quality or mode. A quality depends upon that which possesses it. Behind the many svabhāvas of living beings and things there is one support, Ātma. If you examine only the dependent world and never its support, you find only anitya. As branches, leaves, flowers, fruit, and the entire tree depend upon the seed, so the Pañca-bhūta world of Prakṛti depends upon Ātma as its seed. One who penetrates this truth through Sādhana and Vicāra becomes a Vedavit. The disposition that longs to know this Reality is Daivī-sampat; the disposition that refuses enquiry yet insists that appearance alone is truth is Āsurī-sampat.” Arjuna was puzzled: “You have just said Ātma is the one support of all, yet now speak of Daivī and Āsurī natures as two. I know You do not speak meaningless or untrue words, so a deeper meaning must be present. Please explain who these divine and demonic dispositions are and how they arise.” Kṛṣṇa answered, “Bāvā, your question is curious. You yourself say I do not act without meaning or speak untruth, yet at once become anxious over what to accept and reject. The confusion comes only because the meaning has not yet been seen.” “Daiva and Asura are not two separate species of being. They are distinctions according to guṇa. The guṇas are superimposed modes. A potter makes pots, jars, and lamps from clay; these forms were not separately present in the natural clay. Clay is the underlying substance; pot, jar, and lamp are constructed nāma-rūpas. My Svarūpa is like the clay. The pots are not separate entities inside Me, yet I am present in every pot as its substance. Guṇas are not limiting properties in Me, but nothing possessing guṇas exists apart from Me. Just as clay and pot cannot finally be torn into two independent substances, Svarūpa and its appearing modes are not two ultimate realities.” Arjuna asked, “Kṛṣṇa, what is the relation between Your Svabhāva and the Svarūpa of Prakṛti?” “Bāvā, I have already told you that Pṛthvī, Jala, Agni, Vāyu, and Ākāśa—the Pañca-bhūtas—are expressions of My Svabhāva. Could the world stand without them?” Arjuna replied, “No, Kṛṣṇa. Without the Pañca-bhūtas no object of this world can stand. Life itself is bound up with them.” “Then accept also the deeper tattvas associated with them. Behind what is seen there is always an unseen support. Even Manas, Buddhi, Citta, and Ahaṅkāra depend upon the Antaḥkaraṇa as their common field, and all dependent modes ultimately rest in Me, Ātma. Changes occur in the dependent level—growth, decay, movement, modification—but do not therefore attribute those changes to the support. The moon remains steady in the sky while its reflection dances in moving water; only a child thinks the moon itself is dancing. To project the movements of the dependent reflection upon the unmoving support is Āsurī understanding. To discern the nityatva and satyatva of the support through the changing appearance is Daivī understanding. The Vedavit sees Svarūpa and Svabhāva in their unity without confusing the change of guṇa with change in the ground.” Arjuna asked, “Mādhava, if differences of guṇa create Daivī and Āsurī dispositions, what qualities mark each?” Kṛṣṇa replied, “Bāvā, for one with your Śraddhā I am always ready to explain. Hear steadily. Daivī-sampat includes: fearlessness, Citta-śuddhi, steadfastness in Jñāna-yoga, dāna, dama or control of the outer senses, yajña, study, Tapas, freedom from deceit, Ahiṁsā, Satya, freedom from anger, Tyāga, Śānti, absence of tale-bearing and slander, compassion toward all beings, restraint from sense-obsession, Tejas, Kṣamā, steadfast courage, Śauca, absence of treachery, gentleness and sweetness of speech, avoidance of actions contrary to Dharma, and freedom from fickleness. Āsurī-sampat is marked by dambha, pride, arrogant self-importance, anger, cruelty and deceit toward others, and lack of Viveka and Jñāna. Human shape alone does not make one truly humane.” Those who embody Daivī qualities may be called persons of divine tendency; those in whom Āsurī qualities dominate are human in form but asuric in disposition. Claims of being ‘divine’ are not proved by title, property, office, or outward appearance. Even a little genuine dayā, Dharma, service, and Śānti can show a movement toward Daivī-sampat; but where demonic tendencies dominate, merely claiming divinity is itself dambha, an Āsurī quality. Rāvaṇa had human form, imperial power, and enormous wealth; those things did not make him Daivī. Guṇa revealed his disposition. Kāma, Krodha, and Lobha are named as major roots of Āsurī-sampat and of self-destruction. Their opposing forces are Vairāgya, Śānti, and Tyāga. Strengthen these with Śraddhā and the roots of Kāma, Krodha, and Lobha can be cut. If even one remains dominant, spiritual life remains in danger. As roots sustain a tree, desire-bonds sustain the tree of saṁsāric identification. Cut the roots little by little and the tree weakens; leave even one strong root and it does not fully die. So too, reducing some desires while preserving others cannot be called complete freedom. Some meditators restrain only selected attachments and then wonder why full Ekāgratā does not arise and why Manas remains suspended in an unstable middle condition. For Pūrṇa-ekāgratā, the network of craving must be completely weakened and finally released. If complete concentration has not arisen, it shows that some desire-bonds remain. Kāma, Krodha, and Lobha are therefore called rākṣasas that seize the human being. The danger is not grotesque outward appearance but distorted inner guṇa. Those whose guṇas are rākṣasic are the real danger to the world. A beautiful body and charming speech do not prove Daivī birth. When Āsurī qualities dance within, outward charm eventually becomes distorted and sweet words can turn into wounds like knife-thrusts. Therefore understand clearly: Daivī-sampat and Āsurī-sampat belong to guṇa and disposition, not to the mere shape of the body.
