In plain words
Then again, when we try to settle why good and bad come about in all natural objects alike, and when we compare certain natural objects once more, it appears contrary to this.
Worth Comes Only through Refinement
Another example. In its natural state, just as it is, we take gold out of the earth. The very moment it is taken out of the earth, it is in a form that has no worth. When it is refined in many ways, it takes on a pure form and gains a place of worth. If we settle that this is true for all time, what is the reason that this unrefined gold we have always seen has no worth, and yet, once this refining is done, comes to have great worth? That a thing joined with nature's flaws of quality becomes pure through refining is a trait of nature. In the same way, when we compare people, we can see that being born, eating, drinking and moving about, all of these, are natural traits and nothing more. Yet a fitting basis is not lacking for raising a personality, born with these natural flaws of quality, through certain refinements to a sacred, divine place. So, to gain equanimity, such refinements stand by us. The watch you wear in your daily life is a model of this. On your wrist is a watch worth 200 rupees. Now, what did you pay these two hundred rupees for? Did you pay for its bolts, nuts and screws, or did you pay for the iron? Throw this watch worth two hundred into the fire, and it will not be worth two annas. But those who know their craft well, who fully understand the working of a watch, finely refine the iron worth two annas, give it the power to run in step with time and build it; the state it is built to is what they call refinement. We give two hundred to that person, for that refinement, and receive it, only because the outlay goes on the refinement that gives it the state of keeping in step with time and telling the time. In the same way, when you, born an ordinary person, stand pure in spirit and even of mind through certain refinements and through the darśana, touch and conversation of the elders, then you yourself have the chance to gain the worth of the name Paramahaṃsa, true to its meaning.
