In plain words
Not tapas, not the tīrthas, not the śāstras, nor indeed japa, in crossing the ocean of saṃsāra, without the service of the good.
Students, embodiments of the sacred Ātma!
Today in Bhārata the people and the government take up a brand-new spiritual path to develop humanness in a new fashion; they take up paths that are not understood and set about handing those very paths to the people, and the way they set about it looks somewhat ridiculous. The natures of the people who spread the influence of the new civilisation, who scorn the culture of Bhārata and, with fine clothes and attractive words, simply devoid of self-confidence, have set out to stir others up with an atheistic outlook: natures borrowed, ideas brought in on hire, measured against mental theories, setting about a state that makes life merely an artificial thing; these have come out today as the arts of modern beings. These people are swept up only by the craving for power; to the duty of carrying out responsibilities they do not set themselves at all. A person who has understood his duty gains a position of authority easily. A person who, without understanding duty, craves nothing but power for himself does not understand the principle of Prakṛti at all. Man needs a citta full of responsibility.
Fulfilment through Service to Society
For refining the hearts of individuals, service and good qualities are foremost. This spirit of service removes Ahaṅkāra from man, develops the principle of Prema, and sets about the effort of bringing the jīva to God. This spirit of service takes shape as man's foremost good quality. This principle of service makes us understand divinity too. Service gives the Ānanda that makes all humanity one.
